Ramadan 2024: Dates, Fasting Hours, and Eid Al Fitr Break in UAE

Ramadan, the holiest month in Islam, is fast approaching, heralding a period of fasting, prayer, and reflection for Muslims worldwide.

In the UAE, this month is marked by a general slowdown in daily life, with reduced office hours and a prevalent spiritual atmosphere.

Determining the Start of Ramadan:

Per the Dubai Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD) calendar, Ramadan in 2024 is expected to commence on Tuesday, March 12, 2024.

This determination is based on the sighting of the crescent moon, a tradition in the Hijri calendar.

March marks the start of the spring season in the UAE, bringing cooler temperatures. Concurrently, schools are anticipated to be closed for either the spring or end-of-term break during Ramadan.

Fasting Duration and Hours:

Compared to 2023, fasting hours in 2024 during the initial days of Ramadan will be shorter, beginning at 13 hours and 16 minutes and gradually extending to nearly 14 hours by the month’s end.

The IACAD calendar projects Ramadan to span 29 days, concluding on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, marking the final day of fasting.

Eid Al Fitr Celebrations and Break:

Following Ramadan, the Islamic festival Eid Al Fitr is anticipated to commence from Ramadan 29 to Shawwal 3, corresponding to Tuesday, April 9, till Friday, April 12, in the Gregorian calendar.

This period constitutes a significant public holiday, extending to a six-day break when accounting for the weekend.
