Born in Sweden, Lundgren’s journey into the world of home furnishings was anything but conventional. In 1984, seeking adventure beyond his homeland, he accepted a decorator position in Saudi Arabia—a bold move that marked the beginning of his Middle Eastern odyssey. This role was followed by a stint with IKEA in Kuwait, where he honed his understanding of the region’s market dynamics.

However, it was a vivid dream in 1993 that truly ignited Lundgren’s entrepreneurial spirit. He envisioned an angel tasking him with a mission: to “save the world from big box corporations.” This profound experience became the catalyst for creating a unique home furnishing brand that stood apart from the ordinary.

Establishing THE One

Armed with his dream and a clear mission, Lundgren relocated to the United Arab Emirates. Despite facing skepticism and numerous rejections from potential partners and banks, his determination remained unshaken. In 1996, he opened the first THE One store in Abu Dhabi, introducing a fresh perspective to home décor that combined affordability with style.

Overcoming Challenges

The initial years were fraught with challenges. THE One faced fires, floods, cash flow issues, and supplier problems. Yet, Lundgren’s resilience turned these obstacles into learning opportunities, strengthening the foundation of his burgeoning enterprise.

Innovative Business Approach

Lundgren’s leadership style is characterized by intuition and a willingness to embrace mistakes as learning opportunities. He believes that success is built on resilience and the ability to adapt, a philosophy that has guided THE One through various challenges.

Expansion and Diversification

Under Lundgren’s visionary leadership, THE One expanded its footprint across the Middle East and North Africa, boasting over 500 employees and 23 stores, along with a bistro, across eight countries. The brand’s offerings evolved to include Fusion, Junior, and Basics lines, each catering to specific customer needs while maintaining the core values of quality and affordability.

Commitment to Social Responsibility

Beyond business growth, Lundgren is deeply committed to social responsibility. THE One emphasizes ethical sourcing and actively contributes to community initiatives. Notably, the company employs individuals with challenges, aiming for them to constitute 3% of the workforce. Additionally, through THE Onederworld program, THE One has undertaken school-building projects in India and Kenya, reflecting Lundgren’s belief in education as a key to ending the cycle of poverty.

Current Endeavors and Future Vision

Today, Lundgren continues to innovate, focusing on sustainability and enhancing customer experiences. His journey from a Swedish decorator to a Middle Eastern retail magnate serves as an inspiring testament to the power of vision, resilience, and ethical entrepreneurship.
