Masdar’s 150MW Solar Project in Angola Aims to Power 90,000 Homes

Masdar, the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Firm, has revealed plans to construct a substantial 150MW solar photovoltaic (PV) project in Angola. 

This initiative aims to provide renewable energy to approximately 90,000 households, generate job opportunities, bolster economic growth, and significantly reduce carbon emissions.

The solar project, planned for the Quipungo region in the Hulia province of southern Angola, aims to address the area’s energy deficiency by capitalizing on its ample solar irradiation potential.

Impact on Angola’s Electrification Goals:

Angola, where less than half the population has access to electricity, particularly in rural zones, is striving to elevate its national electrification rate to nearly 60% by 2025. This solar venture is poised to contribute significantly to achieving this target.

During the UN’s climate change conference (COP28) in Dubai, Masdar inked a concession agreement with Angola’s Ministry of Energy and Water. 

The deal, signed by Angola’s Minister of Energy and Water Joao Baptista Borges and Masdar’s CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, marks a crucial step towards the project’s realization.

Masdar’s Commitment to African Renewable Energy:

Through its Infinity Power platform, Masdar is dedicated to accelerating Africa’s renewable energy capabilities. 

The company aims to deliver 10GW of clean energy in Africa by 2030 and has joined forces with Africa50, focusing on infrastructure investments. 

Masdar’s CEO highlighted the company’s commitment to mobilize $10 billion in clean energy finance, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainable energy in Africa.

Environmental and Economic Impact:

The solar initiative in Quipungo is projected to mitigate 224,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually, equivalent to removing 50,000 cars from roads. 

Beyond its environmental benefits, the project is expected to create up to 600 jobs during construction and foster economic growth, particularly in sectors like agriculture, by ensuring access to reliable, clean energy.

Masdar’s solar project in Angola is part of a broader commitment unveiled during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2023. 

This commitment aims to develop 5GW of renewable energy projects across Angola, Uganda, and Zambia under the Etihad 7 initiative. 

Etihad 7, a global development fund launched by the UAE, targets providing clean electricity to 100 million African people by 2035.
