This response aims to support Libya’s efforts in coping with the devastating consequences of the floods triggered by Storm Daniel, which have resulted in numerous casualties, injuries, and extensive damage.
Condolences and Sympathy:
Sheikh Mohamed expressed his heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the State of Libya, its people, and the families of the flood victims.
He also extended his best wishes for a quick recovery to those injured in the disaster.
In a message on social media, Sheikh Mohamed conveyed the UAE’s deep sadness at the tragic flooding in Libya and offered condolences to the families affected by the catastrophe.
The severity of the Flooding:
The flooding in eastern Libya, particularly in Derna, has been catastrophic. Authorities in the region reported a significant loss of life, with at least 2,000 people confirmed dead and many others missing.
The head of the Red Crescent aid group initially reported a death toll 150, which was expected to rise to 250. However, these figures could not be independently verified.
Ahmed Mismari, the spokesperson for the Libyan National Army (LNA) in control of eastern Libya, explained that the disaster resulted from dam failures above Derna, flooding entire neighbourhoods and their residents’ displacement. The number of missing individuals was estimated to be between 5,000 and 6,000.
