UAE Observes National Mourning Period for Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Nawaf

Following the death of Kuwait's Emir, President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan declared a three-day national mourning period.

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President, announced a three-day national mourning period following the passing of Kuwait’s Emir, Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah. 

Flags will be flown at half-mast across government departments, UAE embassies, and diplomatic missions abroad, as Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed directed.

Condolences from Key UAE Leaders:

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, conveyed his condolences via a statement. 

Reflecting on Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah’s six-decade service to Kuwait, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum praised his sincere dedication to his role.

Emir’s Legacy and Political Journey:

Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah, born in 1937, began his political career as the governor of Hawalli province at the age of 25. 

Progressing through the ranks, he notably served as interior minister for a decade until assuming the role of Emir in 2020, succeeding the late Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah.

Succession and the Future of Kuwait’s Leadership:

With Sheikh Nawaf’s passing, attention turns to Sheikh Meshal Al Ahmad Al Jaber, 83, who is the world’s oldest crown prince. 

Sheikh Meshal is next in line for succession, poised to assume the role of Kuwait’s ruler. His potential ascent marks a significant transition in Kuwait’s leadership following Sheikh Nawaf’s tenure.
