The UAE made a significant announcement today, unveiling the Women in Nuclear (WiN) Middle East Chapter at the 28th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28).
This momentous launch was led by key figures, including Mohamed Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), Dominique Mouillot, President of WiN Global, and Sama Bilbao y Leon, Director-General of World Nuclear Association.
Regional Expansion and Objectives:
Egypt joined the WiN Middle East Chapter, which welcomes other regional countries to participate. WiN, a non-profit organization, empowers women in nuclear energy and technology and fosters interest in the sector.
WiN Global, with over 4,800 members in 107 countries, pursues a common mission of promoting nuclear energy benefits while advocating for gender balance.
Women’s Role in UAE’s Nuclear Programme:
Emphasizing the pivotal role of women in the UAE’s Peaceful Nuclear Energy Programme, around 20% of the workforce comprises women contributing across diverse areas, including engineering, reactor operations, nuclear safety, and technical domains.
ENEC’s continuous support has positioned Emirati women at the forefront, aligning with the UAE’s commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment across clean energy and related industries.

Women’s crucial roles at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant underscore their significant contributions in critical positions, such as senior reactor operators and fuel load specialists.
Mohamed Al Hammadi highlighted the invaluable contribution of Emirati women in driving the UAE’s sustainable energy goals and inspiring the nation’s youth.
