UAE Implements Price Freeze on Essential Items for Ramadan 2024
As Ramadan approaches, the Ministry of Economy in the UAE has announced strict measures to prevent retailers from increasing the prices of essential items without prior approval. This policy, aimed at ensuring affordability and accessibility during the holy month, covers a range of staple goods including cooking oil, eggs, dairy products, rice, sugar, poultry, grains, bread, and wheat.
Abdullah Al Shamsi, Assistant Undersecretary for the Ministry’s Monitoring and Follow-Up Sector, emphasized that retailers are prohibited from raising prices on essential goods without explicit authorization from the ministry and relevant authorities. This initiative aligns with the country’s commitment to freezing prices during Ramadan, a practice implemented in recent years to alleviate financial strain on consumers.
To enforce compliance with discount offers announced for Ramadan, the Ministry has established an investigation team dedicated to safeguarding consumer rights and ensuring transparency in pricing. This team, composed of representatives from the Ministry of Economy, economic development departments, and other federal authorities, aims to prevent discrepancies between advertised and actual prices during the month.
With Ramadan expected to commence on March 10 or March 11, retailers across the UAE have unveiled price reductions designed to benefit millions of consumers. These measures seek to mitigate concerns over rising prices and alleviate the financial burden on individuals and families during the holy month and Eid Al Fitr.
Mr. Abdullah underscored the Ministry’s commitment to consumer protection, citing ongoing inspections and enforcement efforts. In 2023 alone, the Ministry conducted a total of 96,200 inspections across various markets, resulting in the identification of 6,545 violations. This proactive approach reflects the government’s dedication to upholding market integrity and safeguarding consumer interests.
In addition to monitoring and enforcement, the Ministry is focused on enhancing consumer awareness of their rights and relevant regulations. By educating the public about existing mechanisms for consumer protection, the Ministry aims to empower individuals to report any discrepancies or violations they encounter. Consumers are encouraged to report issues by calling 8001222, contributing to the overall integrity and transparency of the market.
As the UAE prepares to observe Ramadan, these initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to ensuring affordability, accessibility, and fairness in the retail sector. Through proactive measures and consumer-focused policies, the Ministry of Economy seeks to uphold the spirit of Ramadan while promoting consumer welfare and market integrity.
