Embracing Authenticity in a World of Expectations
Tamar Leek, affectionately known as Bahrain Barbie, has transformed her early struggles into a powerful narrative of self-acceptance and artistic expression. With a remarkable journey marked by resilience and creativity, Tamar’s story is a testament to the importance of authenticity in a world that often pressures individuals to conform. From a young age, she grappled with the fear of ridicule, but those very experiences have shaped her into the bold and unapologetic artist she is today.
Overcoming Fear and Finding Confidence
Tamar’s early life was not without its challenges. Like many, she faced bullying throughout her school years, which severely undermined her confidence. “Being bullied made me afraid to express myself.” Tamar recalls, “I remember being terrified to sing on stage during school assemblies, worried about being mocked by my peers”. Tamar describes how the words and actions of others made her hesitant to fully explore her talents. Admitting that it eroded her confidence and identity. “When you are constantly told that you’re weird or unattractive, it becomes easy to internalize those messages.
However, the very traits that made her feel different—her vibrant self-expression and individuality—would eventually become her greatest strengths. “It took years of self-love and acceptance to be comfortable with who I am,” she reflects. “Now, I embrace my uniqueness unapologetically, and that authenticity has brought me peace.”
Pursuing Passion Through Performing Arts
Tamar always had a passion for art, dreaming of becoming a painter. Her father still believes she would have excelled in that field. However, the pull towards performance art was undeniable. “I enrolled in performing arts college, despite having no experience,” she shares. “I followed my heart and earned a performing arts diploma, later obtaining a degree in contemporary dance.”
This decision opened the door to a world of opportunities. Tamar’s career flourished as she traveled the globe, performing and living her passion on stage. One of her proudest moments came when she sang at a star-studded charity event at Abbey Road Studios in London, sharing the stage with icons like Kylie Minogue and Nicole Scherzinger. “When Samuel L. Jackson exclaimed, ‘DAMN GIRL, YOU CAN SING!’ and hugged me, “I felt like I had finally taken my power back” she beams.
The Art of Resilience and Creativity
Throughout her career, Tamar faced various challenges, from navigating trust issues to dealing with sabotage in the competitive world of performance art. Each setback, however painful, became a stepping stone toward personal growth. “I’ve learned that every challenge is an opportunity for growth,” she explains. “It’s like climbing a ladder; each rung brings me closer to mastering my craft.”
Despite her success, Tamar remained connected to her first love—art and painting. With unwavering encouragement from her father and inspiration from her grandmother, she is currently working on her first collection of ten oil paintings. “The journey has been slow due to my ADHD, which makes it challenging to focus on one project at a time,” she admits. “But I’m determined to finish my collection before next summer.”
A Source of Inspiration
Tamar attributes much of her creativity and confidence to the women who have inspired her along the way, including pop icons like Gwen Stefani and Lady Gaga. “These strong women are unapologetic and vibrant; they motivate me to be bold in my self-expression,” she states.
When faced with difficulties, Tamar reminds herself of the gratitude she has. “While it may sound self-indulgent, I draw immense motivation from the inner strength and the resilience I’ve built,” she shares. “I’ve learned to rely on myself, recognizing that I’ve rescued myself time and again.”
Redefining Success and Authenticity
Tamar’s definition of success has evolved significantly over the years. Initially focused on fame and recognition, she now finds success in inner peace and gratitude. “I still struggle with perfectionism and that nagging inner voice that says I’m never good enough,” she confesses. “But I’ve learned to silence that critic and celebrate my personal best, regardless of the challenges.”
Authenticity plays a crucial role in her creative journey. “Embracing my true self has shaped my work and helped me connect deeply with others,” Tamar explains. “Once I stopped conforming to others’ expectations, everything changed. My creativity flourished, and I found true fulfilment in my artistic journey.”
Advice for the Younger Generation
Looking back on her journey, Tamar wishes she could advise her younger self to be discerning about whose opinions to heed. “I would tell myself to embrace my unique talents fully, and dedicate more time to nurturing them.” she shares. “Understanding emotional intelligence and applying it effectively in my relationships would have empowered me greatly.”
As Tamar Leek continues to evolve as an artist and performer, she remains dedicated to sharing her story and inspiring others. Through her art, music, and unapologetic self-expression, she encourages individuals to embrace their uniqueness and chase their dreams, regardless of societal expectations.Tamar’s journey serves as a reminder that success is not solely about external validation; it’s about the peace and fulfillment that comes from being true to oneself.
