St Mary’s Church Dubai to Host Simbang Gabi Amid Rain

Simbang Gabi Dubai

Simbang Gabi, the cherished Filipino tradition of evening masses leading up to Christmas, will continue at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Dubai despite the expected rain. Church leaders have confirmed that all preparations are in place to ensure that parishioners can safely attend the celebrations.

What is Simbang Gabi?

Simbang Gabi is a nine-day series of outdoor masses held by Filipino communities worldwide in the lead-up to Christmas. It is a time for faith, reflection, and community bonding. Traditionally, St Mary’s Church hosts the evening mass outdoors, allowing thousands of devotees to join in the festive worship.

Large Turnout Expected

On the first day of Simbang Gabi this year, over 20,000 attendees joined the evening mass. By the second day, attendance reportedly reached around 30,000, including notable figures like Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle. The large turnout reflects the strong devotion and enthusiasm of the Filipino community in Dubai.

UAE Weather Warnings

Dubai authorities have issued alerts for unstable weather conditions. Residents are advised to stay away from beaches, valleys, flood-prone areas, and low-lying locations. Motorists are also cautioned to drive carefully and follow instructions from relevant authorities.

The National Centre of Meteorology has confirmed that Dubai and Abu Dhabi will experience the first wave of rain on Thursday night. While January and February are usually the rainiest months, December marks the beginning of this wet period. The country is currently under atmospheric instability, creating conditions for sudden rainfall.

Staying Safe During Simbang Gabi

While the rains may pose challenges, church leaders emphasize safety and preparedness. Parishioners attending Simbang Gabi should follow these simple tips:

  • Carry umbrellas, raincoats, or waterproof clothing
  • Drive cautiously if traveling to the church
  • Stay updated with church announcements on social media
  • Avoid areas prone to flooding or low-lying locations

Despite the rain, the spirit of Simbang Gabi remains strong. The Filipino community continues to celebrate with faith, devotion, and resilience, ensuring that the festive tradition is upheld even during challenging weather.

A Celebration of Faith and Community

Simbang Gabi is more than just a religious event; it is a celebration of culture, faith, and togetherness. Families, friends, and community members gather in anticipation of Christmas, sharing prayers, songs, and joy. The rains are a minor obstacle in comparison to the strong sense of unity and devotion that defines this annual tradition.

With careful planning and precautions, St Mary’s Church aims to make this year’s Simbang Gabi a memorable and safe experience for all attendees, proving that faith and community spirit can shine even in the rain.
