Sibling Bonds in Family Celebrated at Sharjah Congress 2025

Sibling Bonds in Family

Sibling bonds in family form one of the strongest relationships a person can experience. These bonds are especially important when a family has a child with a disability, as siblings often become advocates, caregivers, and sources of lifelong support. The importance of these bonds was highlighted at the ‘World Congress 2025 We Are Inclusion,’ held at Expo Centre Sharjah.

The Congress was inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, marking the first time this global event was hosted in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). It focused on celebrating family inclusion and recognizing the critical role siblings play in fostering supportive environments.

The Role of Siblings in Families

Siblings often play a crucial role in the lives of their brothers and sisters with disabilities. They can be advocates, caregivers, and lifelong supporters. Their involvement is vital in ensuring that their siblings receive the care and attention they need. The session at the Congress highlighted the importance of recognizing and supporting the role of siblings in families.

Shabina Bano from India shared her experience of caring for her brother with cerebral palsy since the age of four, ensuring he was included in every celebration. She even chose a partner who embraced and supported her brother.

Fayel Odeny from Kenya described the struggles of caring for an older sister in a large family. She admitted to rebelling when the responsibility was placed on her but eventually grew into a leader, extending care beyond her sister to her community.

The Importance of Support Networks

The Congress also emphasized the need for support networks for siblings. Many noted that older siblings—often daughters—carry the heaviest caregiving responsibilities. They agreed that peer networks of parents and adult siblings could provide much-needed guidance and support. These networks can help siblings navigate the challenges they face and ensure they have the resources and support they need.

Looking Ahead

The discussions at the Congress highlighted the importance of recognizing and supporting the role of siblings in families. As the event continues, it is hoped that the insights shared will lead to greater inclusion and support for families around the world. By celebrating the bond between siblings, the Congress aims to foster a more inclusive and supportive society for all.
