Sharjah to Fire Cannons at 5 Locations During Ramadan
In a revival of an age-old tradition, the Sharjah Police have announced plans to fire cannons at five different locations across the emirate during the holy month of Ramadan. This tradition, dating back to 10th-century Egypt, originally served as a signal to mark the time for Iftar, the evening meal to break the fast during Ramadan.
The identified locations for launching the Iftar cannon include the Meteorological Front Square, Fortress Square in the Central Region, Clock Tower Square in Kalba City, Khurfkan Runway Square, and Daba Al Hassan Center Square. Each site has been strategically chosen to ensure widespread visibility and participation in this cherished tradition.
Historically, the firing of cannons during Ramadan holds significant cultural and religious importance. Originating in Egypt centuries ago, the tradition symbolizes the communal spirit of breaking the fast and coming together as a community to observe this sacred time of reflection and worship.
The Sharjah Police, in alignment with its commitment to preserving cultural heritage and promoting community engagement, aims to revive this tradition to bring joy and unity to citizens, residents, and visitors alike. By announcing the locations where the cannons will be fired, the authority seeks to invite individuals from all walks of life to witness and partake in this time-honored ritual.
As preparations for Ramadan continue across the UAE, the firing of cannons in Sharjah serves as a reminder of the rich tapestry of traditions and customs that define the holy month. It is an opportunity for individuals to come together, regardless of background or creed, to celebrate the spirit of Ramadan and foster a sense of belonging and solidarity within the community.
As the cannons echo across the emirate, signaling the arrival of Iftar, residents and visitors can embrace the significance of this ancient tradition and reflect on the values of compassion, gratitude, and togetherness that define the essence of Ramadan.
