A Renewed Public Space Reflecting National Heritage
Sharjah’s rich cultural landscape has gained a significant new landmark with the opening of the redesigned Independence Square and its central Independence Monument. The project was inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah and a member of the Supreme Council. The redevelopment reflects Sharjah’s long-standing commitment to preserving its historical identity while transforming public spaces to meet modern needs.
The redesigned square celebrates the spirit of unity, commemorates important national events, and creates an inviting gathering place for residents and visitors. With its upgraded walkways, scenic landscaping, and architecturally enhanced surroundings, the square now stands as a symbol of Sharjah’s evolving urban character.
The Independence Monument: Symbol of Unity and History
At the centre of the square stands the newly constructed 34-meter monument, which serves as the focal point of the redevelopment. Its structure is topped with a seven-pointed star representing the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates. This star is designed to reflect unity, shared values, and the collective journey of the nation.
The monument features four engraved plaques that recount major events in the UAE’s formation. One plaque commemorates the historic agreement between the Rulers to establish the United Arab Emirates after independence. Another plaque documents the period of British presence, dating back to early treaties signed with the local rulers. A third plaque highlights the founding of the Sharjah Civil Air Station, which continued to operate after the end of the British military presence. The final plaque discusses the establishment of the British military base on the air station, a moment that marked a sensitive chapter in the emirate’s history.
These inscriptions transform the monument into a living archive, allowing visitors to learn about the nation’s early years and the significant decisions that shaped its independence. More than a structure, it acts as a storytelling piece linking generations to the country’s past.

A Modern Urban Landscape Designed for the Community
The redevelopment of Independence Square was planned with a focus on enhancing the visitor experience and creating a cohesive urban environment. Two fountains flank the monument, adding a dynamic and visually appealing element to the space. Their movement and sound bring life to the square, making it a pleasant environment for families and visitors.
Landscaping workers have planted new greenery to soften the urban feel of the area while providing shaded spaces. Walkways have been rebuilt to make the site more accessible and comfortable for pedestrians. The installation of a modern lighting system ensures the square remains appealing in the evening, highlighting both design features and historical elements.
This thoughtful combination of natural and architectural enhancements has transformed Independence Square into a welcoming public destination that beautifully balances leisure, history, and design.
Architectural Upgrades to Surrounding Buildings
An important component of the redevelopment included improvements to the buildings facing the square. Twenty-four building facades have been upgraded with new architectural elements and finishes that reflect Sharjah’s cultural identity. This coordinated approach ensures that the entire square, not just the monument, contributes to the site’s overall visual harmony.
Commercial signs around the square have been replaced and standardised to create a uniform appearance. In total, ninety-five signboards were removed and redesigned to match the updated architectural style. Modern lighting installed on the surrounding structures enhances nighttime visibility and adds depth to the square’s aesthetic appeal.
These changes demonstrate a holistic vision that extends far beyond a single monument. They contribute to a unified urban setting that promotes cultural continuity and creates an inviting environment for visitors.
Infrastructure Improvements Supporting Urban Growth
The redevelopment also included vital infrastructure work aimed at improving traffic flow, safety, and convenience. Roads, pavements, and parking facilities around Independence Square have been rebuilt to meet modern urban standards. These upgrades reduce congestion, enhance pedestrian movement, and improve overall accessibility.
Lighting columns throughout the area were replaced with modern, efficient alternatives, ensuring the square remains well-lit and secure. Together, these upgrades support the city’s ongoing development and contribute to Sharjah’s goal of creating a sustainable and efficient urban environment.
Sharjah’s Vision for Cultural and Urban Growth

The renewal of Independence Square is a reflection of Sharjah’s long-term vision to enhance public spaces while preserving the emirate’s cultural character. His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi has consistently championed the integration of heritage with modern development. This project is part of a broader effort to elevate Sharjah’s urban landscape through meaningful enhancements that enrich community life.
The redesigned square supports the emirate’s cultural goals by promoting national identity, offering educational value, and strengthening the connection between residents and the country’s history. At the same time, it provides an attractive, functional urban space for daily use.
Restoration of the Imam Al-Nawawi Mosque
Alongside the inauguration of Independence Square, His Highness also reopened the restored Imam Al-Nawawi Mosque, located near the square. Originally built in 1995, the mosque has been renovated in the elegant Fatimid architectural style. The restoration includes raising the height of the minarets and external walls to enhance the structure’s visual presence.
An external arcade has been added, giving the mosque a more traditional aesthetic while providing shaded outdoor space for worshippers. Facilities and interior features have also been upgraded to improve comfort and functionality. These enhancements highlight the emirate’s dedication to preserving religious architecture and ensuring that mosques continue to serve as cultural and social pillars.
The restored mosque complements the renewed square, creating a harmonious combination of historical reverence and urban development in the heart of Sharjah.

A Unified Effort Supporting Sharjah’s Development
The inauguration event was attended by several high-ranking officials and dignitaries who toured the site to view the extensive improvements. Their presence underscores the importance of Independence Square within the emirate’s broader development agenda.
The redevelopment of this central space aligns with Sharjah’s continuous efforts to upgrade vital areas, enhance urban infrastructure, and preserve the city’s heritage. Through these projects, the emirate continues to demonstrate its commitment to cultural preservation, public comfort, and sustainable urban progress.
A Landmark for Present and Future Generations
The revitalised Independence Square now stands as a prominent landmark that embodies Sharjah’s heritage, unity, and development. The monument, fountains, renewed architecture, improved infrastructure, and restored mosque all contribute to creating an environment that is both historically meaningful and visually engaging.
This transformation ensures that Independence Square will serve as a gathering place for generations to come, offering a space where visitors can reflect on the nation’s history, enjoy the surroundings, and appreciate the emirate’s ongoing journey of growth.
