Seagate Unveils Massive 36TB Hard Drives, Extending Groundbreaking Mozaic 3+ HAMR Technology Platform

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, January 22, 2025 – Seagate Technology Holdings plc (NASDAQ: STX), a global leader in mass-capacity data storage, today announced it has begun shipping Exos® M hard drive samples to select customers, offering industry-leading capacities up to 36 terabytes (TB). These record-breaking drives are powered by Mozaic 3+, Seagate’s advanced heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) platform, designed to address the explosive growth of data in cloud and AI workloads.

Exos M Drives: Redefining Data Center Storage

As hyperscale data centers face unprecedented demands due to AI, cloud services, and data retention requirements, Seagate’s Exos M drives represent a leap forward in scalability, cost-efficiency, and environmental impact.

  • Cloud-Ready Deployment: Exos M drives up to 32TB are already being ramped for volume shipment by a major cloud service provider. Drives up to 36TB are currently in sampling stages.
  • Unmatched Areal Density: Seagate is now delivering areal densities of 3.6TB per platter, achieving 10-platter, 36TB drives—the highest in the industry.
  • Cost and Power Efficiency: The Mozaic 3+ platform offers a 25% reduction in cost per TB, and 60% reduction in power consumption per TB, helping organizations lower TCO and improve sustainability.
  • Future-Proof Innovation: Seagate has successfully demonstrated over 6TB per disk capacities in lab environments, paving the way to 10TB per platter in the near future.

Industry Leaders Endorse Seagate’s Innovation

Dell Technologies has already embraced Exos M 32TB drives, preparing to integrate them into high-density storage systems like Dell PowerScale.

“Dell PowerScale with Seagate’s HAMR-enabled Mozaic 3+ technology plays a crucial role in supporting AI use cases like retrieval augmented generation (RAG), inferencing, and agentic workflows,” said Travis Vigil, SVP, ISG Product Management at Dell.
“Together, Dell Technologies and Seagate are setting the standard for industry-leading AI storage innovation.”

Dave Mosley, CEO of Seagate, emphasized the importance of long-term storage at scale:

“The world is undergoing a seismic shift in data creation and management due to AI and cloud expansion,” Mosley stated.
“With Exos M, we enable organizations to store, retain, and access more data than ever before—ensuring the trust and accuracy of their AI-driven outcomes.”

IDC also highlighted the importance of high-capacity hard drives in AI-led infrastructures:

“Hard drives remain the backbone of large-scale data storage,” said Kuba Stolarski, Research VP at IDC.
“Seagate’s advances in areal density are crucial to meeting rising storage needs, especially as 89% of data in leading cloud service providers is still stored on hard drives.”
