When Sally Von Mire was seven years old, she experienced a heartbreak that would shape her entire life. Her grandmother, a beloved figure who had been battling a long illness, passed away. The loss left a deep impact on Sally, stirring emotions she did not know how to handle. Instead of allowing sadness to overwhelm her, she found comfort in music and the arts, places where she could pour out her feelings and find healing.
Music and art became her refuge. She took piano lessons, learned to paint, and even joined Armenian folkloric dance classes. These activities helped her express everything she felt inside.
That early escape into creativity laid the foundation for Sally’s future. But it was an unexpected moment at age 13 that truly changed her path when her painting teacher introduced her to jazz music.
A Teacher’s Vision Sparks a Jazz Passion
Sally’s painting teacher, Vartan Khabayan, played a pivotal role in her journey. He made her listen to Melody Gardot’s jazz album. At that time, Sally was not into jazz at all. But Vartan believed her voice would be perfect for that style.
Curious and trusting her teacher’s vision, Sally gave the album a chance. She was immediately captivated by Melody Gardot’s rich voice and the emotional depth of the music. From that day, Sally started learning Gardot’s songs and fell deeply in love with jazz.
Jazz did not just change Sally’s music taste; it shaped who she is inside and out. It gave birth to the artist known as Sally Von Mire.
Pursuing Art and Music Hand in Hand
Sally’s creative interests extended far beyond music. In 2018, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Arts and Advertising from a prestigious university in Lebanon. Alongside her main studies, she explored illustration, photography, art direction, and multimedia.
Her career took shape in diverse artistic fields. Sally worked as a photojournalist for well-known newspapers and magazines and participated in group photography exhibitions both in Lebanon and abroad. Yet, music was always her true passion.
She shares that she never stopped learning music. Sally attended jazz seminars, took masterclasses, and private vocal lessons. All of this prepared her to become not just a singer but also a vocal coach.
Challenges That Shaped Her
Sally’s rise to success was not without obstacles. The music world is tough, and her own perfectionism sometimes became her biggest hurdle. She was always afraid of not delivering a perfect performance.
However, she learned to overcome these mental barriers and turned her experiences into lessons for others. Today, as a vocal coach, Sally generously shares everything she has learned with her students, helping them grow more quickly in their own journeys.
When she performs live, Sally gives her heart completely. She wants the audience to feel her emotions and take them on a journey into her fragile world. That connection is what makes jazz special for her.
Breaking New Ground in Jeddah
One of Sally’s proudest moments came when she became the first woman to perform jazz music in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Over nearly six months, she delivered more than 50 shows, introducing the magic of jazz to an audience unfamiliar with the genre.
This experience meant a lot to Sally. She wanted to bring a new sound and feeling to the people of Jeddah and open their hearts to jazz.
Her time in Jeddah was not only a personal achievement but also a cultural milestone, as female performers face unique challenges in that region.
Rising Star of Beirut’s Music Scene
Sally’s big professional break came in September 2022 when she was invited to perform regularly at MusicHall Beirut (by Michel Elefteriades), a legendary venue where many great artists have launched their careers.
MusicHall Beirut was a dream place for Sally. When she got the call, she was excited but also nervous. Her perfectionism pushed her to give every performance her absolute best.
Her hard work paid off. Sally quickly became a beloved figure in Lebanon’s jazz community, known for her elegant presence and soulful performances.
Expanding Her Impact: Writing and Teaching
Beyond performing, Sally is now working on an autobiography to share the lessons life has taught her the hardships she overcame and the wisdom she gained.
She wants to help others by telling her story. Sally believes sharing experiences can inspire people to face their own challenges stronger.
In addition, she is creating vocal training videos for online lessons, expanding her reach and helping aspiring singers from anywhere in the world.
The biggest lesson she has learned is that ego is your worst enemy. Being humble, open to feedback, and willing to learn are essential to grow in this industry.
A Vision of Honest and Elegant Art
Sally believes art should be honest and delivered with dignity. She opposes the idea that artists need to conform to certain beauty standards or wear revealing clothing to attract attention.
Art is a language, she explains. If you have nothing truthful to say, no appearance can hide that. Sally wants to be remembered as an honest, hard-working woman who brings light wherever she goes.
Advice to Her Younger Self
Looking back, Sally offers advice she wishes she had known earlier. She would tell her younger self not to overshare life and not to trust everyone who smiles. Envy and jealousy exist even when you think you are too small to be noticed. She also reminds herself never to underestimate her own worth.
