Preserving Sanctity and Hygiene: The Massive Effort at Medina’s Prophet’s Mosque

At the Prophet’s Mosque, one of Islam’s holiest sites in Medina, Saudi authorities use significant amounts of substances daily for sterilization and scenting purposes. Each day, 115 tonnes of rug sterilization substances and 30 tonnes (30,000 liters) of perfume are used. Fawzi Al Hujaili, Deputy Chief of the General Authority for Care of the Two Holy Mosques for Services, mentioned the daily programs implemented at the mosque for sterilization and disinfection. The equipment used for these processes includes over 600 devices, each operated by well-trained workers.

The mosque is a key destination for pilgrims, especially after undertaking rites of Umrah at the Grand Mosque in Mecca. It houses the tomb of Prophet Mohammad (Peace Be Upon Him) in Al Rawda Al Sharifa. Recently, Saudi Arabia reported that around 5.2 million Muslims offered prayers at the Prophet’s Mosque in a single week. Additionally, last April, the authorities introduced a new gilded brass barrier around the Sacred Chamber at the mosque, replacing an older wooden barrier to maintain the site’s visual identity and architectural pattern
