In a remarkable display of determination, Faisal Al Mosawi, a former footballer turned diver, has broken the world record for the fastest dive with an underwater wheelchair at Dubai Mall’s Aquarium. The 38-year-old Kuwaiti native, paralyzed from the waist down since a car accident in 2005, has defied the odds once again, showcasing his indomitable spirit and inspiring countless individuals worldwide.

Born and raised in Kuwait, Al Mosawi’s life took a dramatic turn in 2005 when a tragic car accident left him paralyzed in the lower half of his body. Initially devastated by his condition and confined to his home, Al Mosawi refused to be defined by his limitations. Determined to forge a new path for himself, he discovered a newfound passion for diving two years after his accident.

Speaking to The National, Al Mosawi shared his journey of resilience and perseverance. “After a series of operations with a hope to walk again, I was frustrated and isolated myself at home. But I decided to be a new person and pursue a different career path,” he said. This decision marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey that would see Al Mosawi break multiple world records in the field of adaptive sports.

Having already shattered records in 2018 and 2022, Al Mosawi set his sights on achieving a third world record in Dubai. On Monday, he made history once again by completing the fastest dive using an underwater wheelchair, covering a distance of 400 meters in just 37 minutes at the Dubai Aquarium.

Expressing his exhilaration and pride, Al Mosawi emphasized the significance of his achievement. “I’m thrilled and excited. This achievement is a testament to the limitless capability of the human spirit,” he exclaimed. “I’m proud of showing my skills. I am immensely proud to demonstrate the capabilities of adaptive sports. This record is for every individual who refuses to be defined by limitations. Nothing is impossible.”

Al Mosawi’s journey to breaking the underwater wheelchair world record was marked by rigorous training and preparation. Over the course of four months, he dedicated himself to intensive swimming and diving sessions, often carrying a 10kg chair or diving equipment to simulate the conditions of the record attempt.

Choosing Dubai as the location for his record-breaking feat, Al Mosawi highlighted the city’s inclusivity and accessibility for people of determination. “Dubai Mall is the busiest place and it helped to send my message, as many visitors watched me dive into the massive water tank,” he explained.

Following his triumphant dive, Al Mosawi expressed gratitude to his family, training team, and the Dubai Sports Council for their unwavering support. Despite facing numerous challenges along the way, he remained steadfast in his pursuit of success.

Reflecting on his journey, Al Mosawi shared his aspirations for the future. “I’m living my life better than before the accident. I am married, have a daughter and overcame the challenges. It is like a dream,” he remarked. In addition to his athletic pursuits, Al Mosawi serves as a motivational speaker and life coach, inspiring others to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
