A powerful earthquake struck the western area of Jajarkot in Nepal, leaving at least 69 people dead and dozens injured.
Witnesses reported collapsed houses in the affected area, and the impact was felt as far away as New Delhi, India.
Conflicting Magnitude Reports:
Nepal’s National Seismological Centre initially reported the earthquake as magnitude 6.4. Still, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) downgraded it to 5.7, and the US Geological Survey stated it was a magnitude 5.6. The discrepancy in reports added to the confusion surrounding the incident.
The epicenter was in Jajarkot, a hilly district with a scattered population of 190,000. Rescue efforts faced challenges due to blocked roads caused by dry landslides triggered by the earthquake.
Ramidanda, the epicenter location, remained inaccessible to authorities, hampering the assessment of the situation.
Immediate Response from Authorities:
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal expressed deep sorrow at the loss of life and property and ordered security agencies to launch immediate rescue and relief operations.
However, reaching remote areas proved difficult due to the harsh terrain and darkness.
Lingering Trauma from 2015 Quakes:
The earthquake stirred memories of Nepal’s devastating earthquakes in 2015, which claimed about 9,000 lives and caused widespread destruction, including the collapse of historic sites and cultural landmarks.
Tremors from the earthquake were felt in neighboring districts and as far as New Delhi, highlighting the seismic intensity and the far-reaching impact of the natural disaster.
The situation in Nepal remains dire, with rescue and relief efforts underway amidst challenges posed by difficult terrain and ongoing aftershocks.
