Liverpool intends to partly open the upper level of their new Anfield Road stand when they meet Manchester United on December 17.
Capacity Boost Underway
Liverpool Football Club is amidst an ambitious £80 million expansion project aimed at elevating Anfield Stadium’s capacity by 7,000 seats, reaching a total of 61,000. However, the project faced delays in its opening, now slated for 2024.
Construction Challenges and Contractor Shift
The delays stemmed from a shift in contractors, with Rayner Rowen Group taking over from Buckingham Group, which faced financial issues leading to administration. This change in contractors caused the rescheduling of the stadium’s completion.
Partial Opening and Upcoming Fixtures
Despite setbacks, Liverpool FC is set to partially open the upper tier of the renovated stand for the upcoming fixture against Manchester United on December 17.
Pending safety approvals, several thousand general admission seats are anticipated to be available for supporters. This partial opening is also expected for subsequent matches against West Ham, Arsenal, and Newcastle United in December.
Club’s Statement
In a statement issued by Liverpool, they affirmed, “The upper tier of the new stand will be partially open for the upcoming fixture against Manchester United on December 17, with several thousand general admission seats expected to be available to supporters.”
