The Journey Begins: A Young Girl with Big Dreams

Kanzy El Defrawy’s love affair with squash began at the tender age of seven. Born in Cairo in 1994, she quickly showcased her talent, clinching her first international tournament win in Germany by age nine. Her early successes, including multiple junior titles and two U-19 World Championships, set the stage for a promising professional career.

Kanzy’s professional journey saw her reaching a career-high world ranking of No. 20 in 2019. She secured several titles, including the NASH Cup and the Richmond Open, and was crowned the USA National Champion in 2016. However, a severe back injury forced her to retire prematurely at 26, halting her ascent in the squash world

A New Chapter: Embracing Change in Dubai

In 2019, seeking a fresh start, Kanzy moved to Dubai with no concrete plans. The transition was challenging; she juggled multiple jobs and grappled with the absence of squash in her life. However, this period of introspection led her to a realization: Dubai lacked a structured squash ecosystem despite having over 1,500 courts.

The Flying Daf: Pioneering Squash in the UAE

In May 2021, Kanzy launched The Flying Daf Squash Academy, the UAE’s first dedicated squash academy. Starting with a single student, the academy rapidly expanded, now operating in multiple locations across Dubai and Abu Dhabi. With a team of elite coaches, the academy offers training to individuals of all ages and skill levels.

Building a Legacy: Beyond Coaching

With squash set to debut in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Kanzy is determined to see the UAE represented. She is spearheading the development of a state-of-the-art squash complex, slated to open in late 2025, which will serve as a training ground for aspiring Olympians.

Words of Wisdom: Lessons from the Court

Reflecting on her journey, Kanzy emphasizes the importance of patience and consistency. “It’s easy to pour energy into short bursts of passion, but real, lasting impact comes from showing up day after day,” she notes. Her story serves as a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the power of following one’s passion.
