Israel Forms Emergency Government for Duration of Gaza Conflict

For the duration of the crisis, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared the formation of a "emergency government" alongside opposition leader Benny Gantz.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared the formation of an “emergency government” with opposition leader Benny Gantz for the duration of the ongoing conflict with Gaza militants.

Establishment of a “War Cabinet”:

Netanyahu and Gantz issued a joint statement confirming the creation of an “emergency government” and a “war cabinet.” This “war cabinet” will consist of three members: Netanyahu, Gantz, and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.

Observers in the War Cabinet:

The statement also revealed that Gadi Eisenkot, a former army chief from Gantz’s party, and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer will be observers in the war cabinet.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid has not joined Gantz in the new government. However, the statement mentioned that a seat would be “reserved” for him in the war cabinet.

Continuation of Netanyahu’s Allies:

Netanyahu’s political allies will remain in the government despite the new collaboration with Gantz.

As part of the agreement, Netanyahu has agreed to freeze the contentious judicial overhaul that had sparked mass protests in the country.

Legislative Focus on the War:

The statement emphasized that no bills or government-sponsored motions unrelated to the war would be advanced during the ongoing conflict.

Gantz and Netanyahu had previously worked together in an administration from 2020 to 2021 under a rotation agreement, but early elections were called before Gantz could assume the role of prime minister.
