In a heartwarming ceremony held in Dubai, Tala Al Khalil, an Iraqi pharmacist, was honored with the esteemed Dh1-million Hope Maker award for her unwavering commitment to caring for children with cancer and Down syndrome. The event, attended by over 12,000 individuals, showcased the power of philanthropy and community resilience.
Tala Al Khalil’s journey as a Hope Maker began in 2015 when she established a special “caravan” at the Basra Children’s Hospital to provide support and hope to young cancer patients. This initiative laid the foundation for her Warriors Academy, which she founded in 2018 to extend care to children of determination suffering from various illnesses. Today, Tala personally tends to 200 children with Down syndrome and cancer, offering them much-needed psychological support and a nurturing environment.
The Hope Maker award, presented by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, is a testament to Tala’s selfless dedication to improving the lives of vulnerable children. Alongside Tala, three other finalists were also recognized for their outstanding humanitarian efforts and were each awarded Dh1 million to continue their impactful work.
Among the finalists was Dr. Mohamed Al Najjar, an amputee who transformed his personal tragedy into a source of inspiration by forming a football team of amputees in Iraq. His initiative not only provided physical activity and camaraderie to fellow amputees but also raised awareness about their abilities and potential.
Another finalist, Amine Imnir, known for his social media presence as ‘Faysboki,’ used his platform to address social issues and improve living conditions for underprivileged Moroccans. Through his organization, the AFTAS Society for Development and Solidarity, Amine spearheaded numerous humanitarian initiatives, including the distribution of essential supplies and funding surgeries for those in need.
Fathiya Al Mahmoud, affectionately known as ‘the mother of orphans,’ was also honored for her extraordinary dedication to caring for orphaned girls in Egypt. Despite facing personal challenges, Fathiya and her husband founded a society named A Touch of Hope, where they have provided a loving home and education to 34 orphaned girls. Additionally, they established a charity hospital offering free healthcare to orphans and people with disabilities.
The Hope Makers initiative, under the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI), aims to recognize and celebrate individuals and organizations making significant contributions to their communities. This year’s edition attracted over 58,000 applications from across the region, highlighting the widespread desire to foster positive change and promote social solidarity.
Sheikh Mohammed emphasized the importance of spreading hope and optimism, particularly in challenging times, stating that hope is essential for overcoming obstacles and creating a better future for all. The initiative serves as a beacon of light, inspiring others to join the fight against despair and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
The ceremony concluded with a renewed sense of optimism and determination, as the Hope Makers pledged to continue their noble efforts and empower communities across the Arab world. Through their collective action, they exemplify the transformative power of compassion and generosity in building a brighter tomorrow.
