Early Life and Education
Born in Syria, Fares Akkad’s early life was marked by the challenges of a region often in turmoil. Despite these hardships, he displayed an unwavering commitment to education. Akkad pursued higher studies in the United States, earning an undergraduate degree in Biotechnology, a Master’s in Information Systems, and an MBA with a focus on entrepreneurship and finance, all with honors.
Diverse Professional Beginnings
Akkad’s career commenced in management consulting with Booz & Co, where he led projects across media, technology, and telecommunications. His expertise further expanded during his tenure at KPMG’s Los Angeles office, where he played a pivotal role in media and technology acquisition deals.
Driving Digital Transformation at MBC Group
Transitioning to the media industry, Akkad joined MBC Group as the head of Distribution and Digital Business Development. In this role, he was instrumental in expanding the company’s digital footprint, notably contributing to the growth of Shahid, MBC’s Arabic video-on-demand service.
Leadership at Meta
In 2017, Akkad joined Meta (formerly Facebook) as the Head of Media Partnerships for the Middle East, Africa, and Turkey. His leadership and vision led to his promotion in 2022 to Regional Director for the MENA region, and subsequently to Managing Director for the Middle East and Africa. In these roles, Akkad has overseen significant projects, including the launch of the 2Africa submarine cable, which now provides 30% of internet connectivity to Africa.
Entrepreneurial Ventures and Advisory Roles
Beyond his corporate achievements, Akkad is deeply involved in the entrepreneurial ecosystem. He has founded, funded, and successfully exited startups globally. Currently, he serves on the boards of several organizations, including CAFU, Enhance Fitness, Aliph Capital, and the TAKREEM Foundation, reflecting his commitment to fostering innovation and social impact.
