INDvsSL Young Dunith Wellalage surprises Indian batters

In a remarkable display of spin bowling prowess, 20-year-old Dunith Wellalage, a slow left-arm spinner, made a significant impact by taking a stunning five-wicket haul during a crucial match against India. 

Despite going unsold at the 2023 IPL auction, Wellalage has emerged as a rising star in the world of cricket, earning accolades for his performances on the field.

Wellalage, who made his ODI debut against Australia just last year, has already showcased his talent by claiming wickets of some of the biggest names in world cricket. 

His list of victims includes renowned players such as Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne (twice), David Warner, and Glenn Maxwell before the match against India.

During the Asia Cup match against India, Wellalage further solidified his reputation by adding five more significant scalps to his collection. 

He dismissed Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya with a combination of turn, bounce, and variations. 

This exceptional spell by the young spinner played a pivotal role in turning the tide of the match after India had made a strong start, reaching 80 for no loss in just 11.1 overs.

Spin Assault on India:

Wellalage’s performance was part of a remarkable spin assault on the Indian team. Rohit Sharma’s side, which initially had a flying start, was eventually bundled out for 213 runs in 49.1 overs, with all 10 wickets falling to spinners. 

In addition to Wellalage’s outstanding five-wicket haul, part-time off-spinner Charith Asalanka also played a pivotal role, claiming four wickets while conceding just 18 runs from his nine overs.
