Husam Gamal, an Emirati air race and aerobatic pilot, has transformed his childhood dream into a soaring reality. Collaborating with XDubai, the UAE’s premier adventure and extreme sports hub, Husam’s journey from a nervous teenager to a celebrated pilot is nothing short of inspirational.
Early Aspirations and First Flight
At just 15 years old, Husam joined the Flying Academy, driven by a passion for aviation. His first solo flight, a year later, was a pivotal moment. “I was so scared. It is more of a mental game,” he recalled. Listening to the engine’s hum and feeling the aircraft’s rhythm, he realized his potential in the skies.
Rapid Rise in Aviation
By 17, Husam had graduated as the youngest pilot in the UAE. His dedication and skill led him to become a captain within five years. However, it was aerobatics that truly captured his heart. Initially undertaken to enhance his upset recovery training, aerobatics soon became a passion, pushing him to improve both his skills and physical fitness.
Facing Challenges and Achieving Success
In 2015, Husam entered his first aerobatics competition in California, finishing last. Undeterred, he viewed this as a learning experience. “You can be physically and mentally ready, but that doesn’t qualify you to go up on the podium,” he admitted. With perseverance, he honed his skills, and by 2019, he clinched first place in the Spanish National Championship.
Venturing into Air Racing
Following his aerobatics success, Husam was invited to a Red Bull training camp to qualify as an air race pilot—a dream for many aviators. The transition was challenging, requiring him to fly faster and lower through air gates. Initially hesitant, he overcame his fears, and upon successfully navigating the gates, he felt an unparalleled sense of accomplishment. “When I passed that gate, I felt like I owned this world,” he shared.
Overcoming Setbacks and Looking Ahead
The COVID-19 pandemic temporarily halted Husam’s competitive pursuits. However, with the support of XDubai, he has returned to the sport with renewed vigor, aiming for the world championship. His journey underscores the importance of resilience and passion in achieving one’s dreams.
