How Menna Amer Became Egypt’s Most Authentic Voice in Media

Menna Amer

As a child, Menna Amer was determined to be the storyteller, not the listener. “I insisted on being the one who told them,” she recalls, referring to bedtime stories. Her mother would smile and remind her that she was the child, but Menna believed the storyteller should be her. That early passion for narration never left her.

Growing up in Egypt, Menna was captivated by the magic of radio. The sound of “Huna al-Qahira” and Umm Kulthum singing in the mornings, the voices that kept her company while studying, and the presenters who felt like friends during car rides all inspired her to pursue a career in radio. She believed radio allowed her to be her truest self, genuine and real

From a radio personality to digital influencer

Menna’s professional journey began in 2010 when she won the “Radio Star” competition, propelling her into the world of Egyptian radio. Over the years, she became the only Egyptian radio host to work across all four of the country’s biggest commercial radio stations: Nogoum FM, Radio 90.90, Radio Hits, and NRJ Egypt. For 12 consecutive years, she has been trusted with the prime drive home show slot, making her one of the most recognized voices on Egyptian airwaves.

But Menna’s talents extend beyond radio. After becoming a mother, she ventured into content creation. “My journey into content creation was never planned it happened after I became a mother,” she shares. Feeling lost and confused, she began experimenting with videos. Her first video did well, the second went viral, and suddenly, she was connecting with people in a way she never imagined. Through her Instagram account, she reached millions of women in less than a year, discussing topics like motherhood, love, and the shared experiences of millennials.

Bridging Traditional and Digital Media

Menna’s ability to connect with audiences across different platforms is a testament to her versatility. On radio, she has been a constant presence for over a decade, while on social media, she has cultivated a community of followers who resonate with her authenticity and relatability.

Her content often delves into the challenges and joys of motherhood, offering a candid look into her life. In one of her Instagram reels, she humorously addresses the common struggles of being a mother, captioning it, “How many of these have happened to you as a mom?” This relatable content has garnered thousands of views and comments, fostering a sense of connection among her followers.

Beyond the Mic: Mentoring the Next Generation

In addition to her work as a radio host and content creator, Menna is dedicated to mentoring aspiring media professionals. She has taught mass communication at universities, designed media curricula, and trained many individuals who have gone on to pursue careers in radio. Through her involvement with Sky Academy, Egypt’s first radio academy powered by NRJ 92.1, she continues to share her expertise with the next generation of broadcasters.

Staying True to Herself

Despite her success, Menna remains grounded and committed to authenticity. She acknowledges the challenges of balancing ambition with staying true to oneself. “The main dilemma has always been the same: how to keep yourself at the very top, top rated, always competing, never allowing anyone to take over your place, while still remaining good, kind, and unpolluted on the inside as a human being,” she reflects.

Her commitment to kindness and authenticity has been a cornerstone of her career. She hopes to be remembered as someone who never lost her authenticity, who always chose kindness while still competing at the top. Most of all, she wants to be remembered as a true voice and a real friend, whether on radio, on stage, or online.

A Mother’s Love and Legacy

At 37, Menna continues to wake up every day with the same love and excitement for radio and connecting with people. Her daughter, Ghalia, is her greatest source of inspiration. “My most important project is raising my daughter Ghalia, helping her become her very best,” she shares.

If she could sit with her younger self at the start of her career, she would offer words of encouragement: “Don’t panic when you fail, it’s part of the journey, and every failure will teach you something that will eventually make you stronger. Don’t waste your energy on things that don’t matter, your path is unique and so is your voice. Be ambitious, but never let ambition harden you or kill your life. Stay kind, stay human, and keep your heart pure. And most importantly, always trust your instincts, they will guide you to the right place.”
