Chennai, reeling under heavy rainfall, faces severe disruptions in travel and infrastructure. 

Multiple flights to and from the UAE were either canceled or diverted as the south Indian city grapples with flooded roads, airports, and public facilities. 

Social media footage depicted cars being swept away as torrential waters inundated neighborhoods.

Airport Closures and Flight Disruptions:

Chennai’s airport operator announced the airfield’s closure until at least 11 pm Monday due to the intense weather conditions, showcasing flooded runways and aprons. 

Etihad Airways canceled two flights and plans to operate larger aircraft on December 5 to accommodate affected passengers. 

The airline actively assists travelers affected by cancellations and advises passengers to update their contact details for real-time flight information.

Flydubai’s Diversion and Cancellations:

A flydubai flight from Dubai to Chennai was diverted to Bengaluru. Passengers were provided with necessary provisions and ground transportation. 

However, flydubai’s return flight stands canceled due to persisting adverse weather in Chennai, prompting the carrier to devise alternative travel arrangements for affected passengers.

Air India’s Monitoring and Advisory:

Air India remains vigilant, monitoring the situation closely as the runway closure in Chennai impacts their scheduled flights. 

They plan to issue advisories closer to their next flight from Chennai to the UAE, which is scheduled for later tonight.

Residents faced with canceled flights had to adjust or cancel their travel plans to Chennai, while others found themselves stranded in the city due to flight disruptions. 

Like Abu Dhabi resident Rashid, travelers faced rescheduling their return flights, hoping for improved conditions by rescheduling travel dates.

Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh brace for heavy rains and severe cyclonic storm Michaung, expecting a 24-hour onslaught. 

Public holidays have been declared in coastal districts, urging residents in Chennai to stay indoors for safety precautions amidst the inclement weather.
