French President Invited as Chief Guest for India’s Republic Day

India has invited French President Emmanuel Macron to be the chief guest at the country’s Republic Day celebrations on January 26, marking a significant gesture to enhance the strategic partnership between the two nations. This will be Macron’s third visit to India as president.

Republic Day Celebrates Constitutional Adoption:

Republic Day marks the adoption of India’s Constitution on January 26, 1950, shortly after gaining independence from British colonial rule. The event includes a ceremonial parade showcasing India’s military capabilities and cultural diversity.

Emmanuel Macron’s office described the invitation as “an extremely strong gesture,” emphasizing the importance of the relationship between India and France. 

Previous French presidents, including François Hollande, Nicolas Sarkozy, and Jacques Chirac, have also attended Republic Day celebrations.

India and France – Strategic Partners:

India’s External Affairs Ministry highlighted that India and France are “strategic partners” with a high degree of convergence on various regional and global issues. 

The nations aim to strengthen cooperation across multiple domains, including climate, military sales, and the Indo-Pacific region.

In July, India’s Defence Acquisition Council approved the purchase of 26 Rafale fighter aircraft from France for the Indian Navy. Additionally, the acquisition of three Scorpene submarines, a joint development of France and Spain, was greenlit.
