Over the past eight months, Dubai has witnessed a concerning rise in e-scooter accidents, resulting in five tragic fatalities and 29 injured individuals.
The Dubai police recorded 32 accidents attributed to the “improper use” of e-scooters, shedding light on the pressing need for increased awareness and responsible riding.
Enforcement and Fines: Police Cracking Down on Violators:
Major-General Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, the director of the traffic department, revealed that stringent measures have been taken to curb reckless e-scooter usage.
In eight months, more than 10,000 fines were issued to riders. Violations that led to fines included endangering one’s own life and the lives of others.
A notable video released by the police showcased various violations, including minors under 16 riding e-scooters, using them on main roads, and riding against traffic flow.
Safety Rules and Responsibilities: A Plea to E-Scooter Riders:
Major-General Al Mazroui urged e-scooter riders to adhere to crucial safety regulations to address the escalating issue.
These rules encompass respecting traffic laws, staying within designated paths, avoiding high-speed roads exceeding 60kmph, and wearing helmets and reflective jackets.
Additionally, riders are expected to obey traffic lights and other road signs while ensuring their e-scooters are equipped with bright white and reflective lights at the front and bright red and reflective lights at the back.
The functionality of brakes is deemed imperative, emphasizing the riders’ responsibility in maintaining their e-scooters.
As Dubai grapples with the repercussions of improper e-scooter use, the onus falls on authorities and riders to work collaboratively.
Stricter enforcement coupled with increased awareness campaigns can pave the way for safer streets, ensuring that e-scooters serve as a convenient and secure mode of transportation for all.
