Dubai’s RTA Reports Surge in Public Transport Usage for 2023
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has announced a significant increase in public transport usage for the year 2023, with a total of 702 million riders recorded across various modes of transportation. This surge represents a notable 13% rise compared to the previous year’s figures, highlighting the growing reliance on public transport among residents and visitors in the emirate.
According to data released by the RTA, the average daily ridership reached 1.92 million passengers in 2023, showcasing a steady increase in the adoption of public transport, shared mobility, and taxi services. His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, expressed his satisfaction with the consistent growth in ridership, emphasizing the authority’s commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure and promoting sustainable mobility solutions.
Expanding Public Transport Network: The RTA has been actively expanding and upgrading the public transport network to meet the growing demands of Dubai’s population. Notable projects such as the Dubai Metro Blue Line, scheduled to commence in 2024, aim to enhance connectivity and accessibility across key areas of the city. The Blue Line project, spanning 30 kilometers with both underground and above-ground sections, is expected to accommodate the projected demographic growth as outlined in the Dubai Urban Master Plan 2040.
Dubai Metro Dominates Ridership: The Dubai Metro continues to be the preferred mode of transport for commuters, capturing the largest share of ridership in 2023. With its extensive network and efficient service, the Dubai Metro accounted for 37% of the total ridership, reflecting a slight increase from the previous year. Interchange stations such as Burjuman and Union Stations witnessed high footfall, serving as crucial hubs for commuters traveling across the Red and Green Lines.
Ridership Statistics: The report highlighted notable figures for various modes of transportation in Dubai:
- Dubai Metro: The Red and Green Lines of the Dubai Metro recorded a combined ridership of 260 million passengers in 2023, marking a 15% increase compared to the previous year. Key stations such as Burjuman and Union Stations emerged as the busiest interchange points, facilitating seamless transfers for passengers.
- Dubai Tram: The Dubai Tram witnessed a notable increase in ridership, serving 8.84 million passengers in 2023, representing an 18% rise from the previous year. The tram network continues to play a vital role in enhancing connectivity within Dubai’s urban areas.
- Public Buses: Public buses remained a popular mode of transport, with ridership reaching 173.5 million passengers in 2023, reflecting a 10% increase compared to 2022. The extensive bus network serves as a vital link for commuters traveling to various destinations across the city.
- Marine Transport: Marine transport, including abras, water buses, and water taxis, witnessed a 9% increase in ridership, with a total of 17.43 million passengers recorded in 2023. The marine transport network provides an alternative and scenic mode of travel for commuters.
- Shared Mobility and Taxis: Shared mobility services, comprising e-hail, smart car rentals, and Bus-On-Demand, experienced a significant 34% growth in ridership, carrying 43.61 million passengers in 2023. Additionally, taxis, operated by Dubai Taxi Company and franchise companies, transported 198.44 million passengers, registering an 8% increase over the previous year.
The RTA’s efforts to enhance public transport infrastructure and promote sustainable mobility solutions have contributed to the steady rise in ridership across Dubai. With ongoing projects and initiatives aimed at improving accessibility and connectivity, the authority remains committed to providing efficient and convenient transportation options for residents and visitors alike.
