Dubai Unveils Ambitious Plans to Revolutionize Bus Travel

Dubai is set to transform its public transportation landscape with a series of innovative initiatives aimed at making bus Travel faster, more efficient, and environmentally friendly. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced comprehensive plans to enhance transport services across the emirate, reflecting Dubai’s commitment to becoming a global leader in smart mobility.

Expanding Coverage and Fleet

Currently, RTA bus services cover approximately 88% of Dubai, with a fleet of 1,390 buses completing around 11,000 daily trips and covering about 333,000 kilometers. To further improve accessibility and meet growing demand, the RTA is expanding its Bus-On-Demand service to include areas like Oud Metha and Barsha Heights. This service allows passengers to book rides through a smart application, offering a flexible and convenient transportation option that connects residential areas with key public transport stations.

Dedicated Lanes for Faster Commutes

In a bid to reduce travel times and enhance the efficiency of bus services, the RTA plans to extend dedicated bus and taxi lanes by an additional 13 kilometers, bringing the total length to 20 kilometers. These lanes are projected to increase ridership by 10%, improve bus arrival rates by 42%, and reduce bus travel time by 41%. By prioritizing buses on key routes, the RTA aims to encourage more residents to opt for public transport, thereby alleviating traffic congestion.

Investing in Sustainable and Smart Technologies

Aligning with Dubai’s vision for a sustainable future, the RTA has signed a deal worth AED 1.1 billion to procure 636 new buses, including 40 electric buses—the largest and first of their kind in the UAE. These buses comply with European specifications for low carbon emissions and are part of the RTA’s strategy to convert all public transport buses to electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles by 2050.

Moreover, the RTA is exploring cutting-edge technologies to enhance the commuting experience. The introduction of the ‘Rail Bus,’ a solar-powered, 3D-printed vehicle capable of carrying 40 passengers at speeds up to 100 km/h, exemplifies Dubai’s commitment to integrating innovative solutions into its transport network. This initiative supports the UAE’s Net Zero Strategy 2050 and Dubai’s Autonomous Transport Strategy 2030.

Enhancing Passenger Experience

To improve the overall commuting experience, the RTA is constructing 762 new bus shelters across strategic locations in Dubai, scheduled for completion by 2025. These shelters are designed with aesthetic appeal and functionality in mind, providing comfort and convenience to passengers. Additionally, the RTA is implementing the ‘Green Road’ safe driving system, which monitors driver behavior in real-time, enhancing safety and reducing traffic violations.

A Vision for the Future

Dubai’s comprehensive approach to revolutionizing bus travel reflects its broader vision of becoming a leader in sustainable and smart urban mobility. By investing in infrastructure, embracing innovative technologies, and prioritizing passenger convenience, the RTA is setting a benchmark for cities worldwide. As these initiatives unfold, residents and visitors alike can look forward to a more efficient, reliable, and eco-friendly public transportation system in Dubai. RTA Official News
