Dubai Police Reveals Alarming Statistics on Mobile Phone Use While Driving

Over 35,000 drivers were caught using their phones behind the wheel in Dubai, a risky practise that resulted in 99 accidents.

In the first eight months of 2023, Dubai witnessed over 35,000 drivers caught using their mobile phones behind the wheel, a dangerous practice that has resulted in 99 accidents.

Tragically, these accidents led to the loss of six lives and caused injuries to 58 individuals, according to the Dubai Police.

Distracted Driving’s Deadly Consequences:

Using a phone while driving can lead to dangerous distractions, resulting in sudden lane changes, collisions, running red lights, and driving below the minimum speed limit on highways. Such actions stem from a lack of focus on the road, which can have severe consequences.

Warning from the Dubai Police:

Maj-Gen Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, director of the General Department of Traffic at the Dubai Police, warned about using phones while driving.

He emphasized that this practice not only diverts a driver’s attention but also significantly increases the likelihood of accidents.

Even a momentary lapse in concentration, such as checking social media or texting, can lead to devastating outcomes.

Penalties for Mobile Phone Use While Driving:

Dubai Police has imposed strict penalties for drivers caught using their phones on the road. Offenders will face a Dh800 fine and receive four black points on their driving records.

This penalty applies whether a driver makes calls, sends texts, or browsing social media while driving.

To catch erring drivers, Dubai Police employ smart technologies.

They use radars to identify various violations, including distracted driving, failure to follow lane discipline, failure to fasten seat belts, and sudden deviations from lanes.

Call for Responsible Driving:

Al Mazroui urged all road users to strictly adhere to traffic regulations and refrain from distractions while driving.

He emphasized the need for drivers to act responsibly on the roads and avoid reckless behavior that puts lives at risk.

These revelations from Dubai Police are a stark reminder of the dangers of using mobile phones while driving and highlight the importance of safe and responsible driving practices on the city’s roads.
