Dubai Launches Dh112 Million Creek Restoration Project

Dubai Municipality initiates a comprehensive restoration effort aimed at fortifying the iconic Dubai Creek against potential flooding and enhancing maritime traffic. The project, valued at Dh112 million, will unfold in two distinct phases, with an initial focus on restoring a 2.1km stretch along the Deira side. This renovation endeavor underscores Dubai’s commitment to bolstering its infrastructure resilience and ensuring the continued vitality of its historic waterway.

In a bid to safeguard against potential flooding and optimize maritime traffic flow, Dubai Municipality has unveiled a monumental Dh112 million restoration project for the iconic Dubai Creek. The initiative, spanning two phases, seeks to fortify the structural integrity of the creek’s embankments while enhancing its operational capacity to accommodate commercial vessels.

Dubbed as a vital artery of Dubai’s economic and social fabric, the Dubai Creek has played an indispensable role in facilitating trade and commerce for over five decades. However, with changing climatic patterns and the evolving landscape of the city, the need for comprehensive restoration and reinforcement has become increasingly imperative.

The first phase of the project will focus on the restoration of a 2.1km stretch along the Deira side of the creek. This segment will undergo meticulous refurbishment, including the replacement and reinforcement of damaged sections of the concrete wall. Additionally, measures will be implemented to deepen the creek’s bed to eight meters and raise the embankment height to three meters, ensuring enhanced flood resilience and safe docking for vessels.

Commenting on the significance of the project, Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality, emphasized the pivotal role of Dubai Creek in the emirate’s economic landscape. He underscored the municipality’s commitment to bolstering the city’s infrastructure resilience and ensuring the uninterrupted flow of maritime traffic.

“The Dubai Creek stands as a testament to the city’s rich maritime heritage and serves as a critical artery for commercial operations,” stated Al Hajri. “Through this ambitious restoration project, we aim to reinforce the creek’s structural integrity and enhance its operational efficiency, thereby bolstering Dubai’s position as a global trade hub.”

Furthermore, the project will encompass the installation of 200 anchors along the creek to facilitate safe navigation services and bolster maritime security measures. The second phase of the initiative will extend to the Bur Dubai side, covering an additional 2.3km length of the creek.

With a projected timeline of 14 months, the restoration project is poised to significantly enhance the resilience of Dubai Creek against climatic fluctuations and rising sea levels. By adhering to the highest global standards in construction and engineering, Dubai Municipality aims to ensure the longevity and sustainability of this historic waterway for generations to come.
