Dubai introduces a comprehensive ban on single-use plastic bags and products, effective January 1, 2024. The resolution, issued by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, aims to curb the usage of disposable and recycled plastic and non-plastic items, spanning various sectors and materials.
The ban encompasses many items, including food delivery packaging, fruit and vegetable wrapping, plastic containers, snack bags, wet wipes, balloons, and food packaging. However, thin bags for packing food and select export-oriented products remain exempt.
Progressive Bans and Fines:
The initiative extends to gradually phase out various plastic items in the coming years. Starting January 1, 2025, products like plastic stirrers, cups, styrofoam food containers, and straws will be prohibited.
Subsequently, from January 1, 2026, the ban will include plastic plates, food containers, tableware, beverage cups, and lids.
Violators of the ban face fines starting at 200, which can double up to a maximum of Dh2,000 for repeat offenses within a year.
Regulation and Grievance Mechanisms:
The directive requires collaboration among relevant authorities, entities, and consumers to reduce single-use product production and consumption.
Grievances against violations can be raised within a specified time frame, subject to a committee’s resolution within ten working days.
