Dubai Hosts Successful Three-Week BVLOS Drone Delivery Trials

Dubai recently conducted a three-week long series of Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) drone delivery demonstrations.

Dubai recently hosted a series of Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) drone delivery trials spanning three weeks.

The trials were conducted in partnership between Jeebly LLC, a UAE-based logistics service provider, and Skye Air Mobility, an Indian autonomous drone delivery company.

Safe and Secure Transportation:

These trials showcased the secure and efficient transportation of a wide range of consumer goods using drones within the Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO).

The drone employed for these trials, Skye Ship One, is equipped with a proprietary connectivity system, navigation system, and multiple safety features, including a parachute and collision avoidance technology.

Videos and photographs captured during the trials depict packages securely stored within delivery boxes attached to the drones.

The drones take off, fly for a duration, and then land at designated areas to complete the delivery process.

Testing Ground at Dubai Experimental Zone:

The testing occurred at the Dubai Experimental Zone within DSO, serving as a real-world test-bed for developing, evaluating, and demonstrating robotics and autonomous systems.

This zone was established as part of the Dubai Programme to Enable Drone Transportation initiated by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and also Chairman of The Executive Council, in November 2021.

Regulatory and Operational Significance:

Ahmad Hasan Belqaizi, the Executive Director of the Aviation Safety and Environment Sector at the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, emphasized the immense significance of the successful trials.

They provided crucial insights into commercial transport operations’ regulatory and operational aspects using drones.

Belqaizi stressed the importance of strategic cooperation among key stakeholders to enhance safety standards and facilitate the use of drones in various sectors.

Raman Pathak, CEO of Jeebly, lauded Dubai’s advanced infrastructure for testing innovative drone solutions.

He highlighted how the BVLOS drone project aligns with sustainable development objectives set by the Universal Postal Union (UPU), offering an environmentally responsible solution for small- to medium-sized package delivery.

Transforming Logistics with Drones:

Ankit Kumar, Founder & CEO of Skye Air Mobility, expressed confidence in drones’ potential to revolutionize the logistics industry.

Skye Ship One, having conducted over 1,700 flights, represents a significant advancement in logistics, and the BVLOS trial aims to showcase the transformative capabilities of drones in last-mile delivery.

Collaboration and Expertise:

Muammar Al Katheeri, Chief Officer of Engineering and Sustainability at Dubai Integrated Economic Zones Authority (DIEZ), highlighted DSO’s role as a welcoming hub for innovators across various sectors to test their drone delivery concepts.

Al Katheeri expressed delight in collaborating with Skye Air and Jeebly, offering expertise and support to ensure the success of their BVLOS drone delivery trials.
