Dubai Government Entities Collaborate to Generate Clean Electricity

The DM and the Dewa have joined forces to generate clean energy from biogas recovered from the Muhaisnah 5 landfill.

In a significant move towards sustainable energy, two prominent Dubai government entities, the Dubai Municipality (DM) and the Dubai Electricity Water Authority (Dewa), have allied to harness clean electricity from biogases extracted from the Muhaisnah 5 landfill.

The groundbreaking project announced during COP28 in Expo City Dubai aligns with Dubai’s commitment to sustainability and the broader UAE Net Zero Strategy 2050.

Green Energy from Landfill Waste:

The collaboration aims to generate energy by tapping into gases emitted during the natural decomposition of landfill waste. The project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 300,000 tonnes annually, contributing significantly to environmental conservation.

Dawood Al Hajri, Director-General of the DM, stated, “The agreement is in line with our plans to develop innovative solutions to waste management, enhancing recycling, and decreasing the environmental impact of waste.”

Commitment to Clean Energy Goals:

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dewa highlighted the overarching ambition of achieving 100 percent clean energy by 2050.

Al Tayer affirmed, “We are dedicated to realizing the objectives outlined in the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050.”

Long-Term Vision and Environmental Impact:

Expressing a commitment to executing pioneering clean projects over the next two decades, Al Tayer emphasized their dedication to providing practical solutions to environmental challenges.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signifies a step forward in the government’s agenda to address climate change through sustainable practices.

Strategic Participation in COP28:

DM’s participation in COP28 as a strategic pathway partner underscores its commitment to sustainability. The climate summit provides over 1,000 municipalities and cities a platform to share insights.

Through its participation, DM is showcasing the country’s plans, designs, and initiatives in building sustainable urban communities for the future.
