Dubai Can's Eco-Friendly Initiative Saves Over 18 Million Plastic Bottles

Dubai Can, a green initiative launched by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, has achieved a remarkable milestone in its battle against single-use plastics. Since its inception in February 2022, the project has successfully reduced the use of single-use plastic by an impressive equivalent of over 18 million bottles. This initiative aims to promote sustainable practices and encourage the use of refillable water bottles among residents and visitors in Dubai.

The cornerstone of Dubai Can’s efforts lies in the installation of over 50 water fountains across the city. These water stations are strategically located in key areas such as public parks, beaches, and tourist attractions, making it convenient for people to access clean drinking water while on the go. Notable locations where these water fountains can be found include Kite Beach, Dubai Marina, JLT, Downtown Dubai, and many more. With plans to install an additional 30 water fountains by the end of the year, Dubai Can is committed to expanding its reach and making sustainable choices more accessible to the community.

Yousuf Lootah, acting chief executive of the corporate strategy and performance sector at Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism, lauded the positive impact of Dubai Can on the city’s efforts to reduce plastic waste. He emphasized the importance of these initiatives in protecting the environment, preserving natural landscapes, and promoting a healthier lifestyle for residents. By encouraging the use of refillable water bottles and reducing reliance on single-use plastics, Dubai Can is paving the way for a more sustainable future in the emirate.

The success of Dubai Can would not have been possible without the support of numerous companies, both public and private, that have rallied behind the initiative. Talabat UAE, represented by Vice President Simonida Subotic, expressed pride in the project’s achievements and highlighted the role of private companies in driving positive change within the community. As sustainability becomes increasingly important on a global scale, collaborations between government entities and private corporations are essential in addressing environmental challenges and fostering a culture of responsibility.

In alignment with Dubai’s commitment to environmental conservation, the government recently implemented a nationwide ban on single-use plastics. This ban encompasses plastic bags across all emirates and will extend to other plastic items such as cutlery and cups by 2026. By taking proactive measures to reduce plastic waste and promote sustainable alternatives, Dubai is leading the way in environmental stewardship and setting an example for cities worldwide.

Dubai Can’s efforts serve as a testament to the power of collective action in addressing pressing environmental issues. With ongoing initiatives and continued support from the community, Dubai is well-positioned to achieve its goals of sustainability and environmental resilience in the years to come.
