Dense fog envelops Dubai and Abu Dhabi, prompting caution for motorists

Dense fog covered various parts of the UAE on Monday morning, leading authorities to issue warnings and implement safety measures for road users. Abu Dhabi Police took action by reducing speed limits to 80 kilometers per hour (kph) across the capital due to deteriorating visibility caused by the fog.

The National Centre of Meteorology cautioned that these hazardous conditions were likely to persist until approximately 10 am, emphasizing the need for vigilance among commuters. According to meteorological experts, the thick fog could significantly reduce visibility, with some areas experiencing visibility of less than a kilometer.

Foggy conditions were reported not only in Abu Dhabi but also in Al Ain, Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, and Sharjah, affecting morning commuters across various emirates.

Abu Dhabi Police issued advisories urging motorists to exercise caution and adhere to reduced speed limits enforced during foggy weather. Electronic road signs displayed these speed limits, and authorities emphasized the importance of compliance to ensure road safety.

Mobile phone alerts were also sent out shortly after 6 am, reminding drivers to follow temporary speed limits and exercise caution while navigating through foggy conditions. Failure to adhere to these speed limits could result in financial penalties, as authorities remain committed to enforcing traffic regulations during adverse weather conditions.

The prevalence of dense fog follows heavy rainfall and thunderstorms that swept across much of the UAE on Saturday, leading to widespread disruption on roads and causing flight diversions and delays.

The 80kph speed limit during foggy conditions was introduced by Abu Dhabi Police in April 2019 as part of efforts to enhance road safety. These temporary speed limits are communicated through electronic signboards on roads and social media announcements to alert drivers to adjust their speeds accordingly.

Implemented after the Department of Transport’s traffic safety committee endorsed a plan to reduce speeds during poor weather, the 80kph speed limit aims to mitigate the risks associated with adverse weather conditions, including heavy rain, sandstorms, and fog.
