A privately owned submersible named Titan, operated by US-based company OceanGate, suffered a catastrophic failure in June while on a mission to explore the Titanic.
The vessel imploded during its descent on June 18, resulting in the tragic loss of all five individuals on board.
Recovery Efforts Underway:
The US Coast Guard, launching its highest level of investigation called a Marine Board of Investigation, has been actively involved in recovering debris and suspected human remains from the Titan submersible. The latest recovery efforts took place on October 4.
During the recovery operation, presumed human remains were found within the debris of the submersible. We medical professionals will analyze these remains as part of the investigation.
International Cooperation for Investigation:
The US Coast Guard is collaborating with the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and other international investigative agencies to jointly review the evidence recovered from the Titan submersible.
The five individuals on board the Titan included Dubai expat and British explorer Hamish Harding, French submarine expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, Pakistani-British tycoon Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman, and Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate Expeditions.
Location and Cause of the Tragedy:
The tragedy occurred at a depth of over two miles in the North Atlantic, and a debris field was located approximately 1,600 feet from the Titanic’s bow.
The cause of the Titan’s implosion is under investigation by the US Coast Guard and Canadian authorities.
