Abu Dhabi is about to welcome an attraction that feels less like a theme park and more like stepping into a living, breathing dream. This week marks the opening of Butterfly Gardens Abu Dhabi, the capital’s first fully immersive butterfly sanctuary, promising a serene escape from city life and a rare chance to walk among thousands of free-flying butterflies.
Opening its doors on January 9, the attraction introduces a completely new way to experience nature in the UAE. Located beside The National Aquarium at Al Qana, the gardens are set to become a must-visit destination for families, tourists, students, and anyone craving a moment of calm.
Announced earlier during Arabian Travel Market, the project has been years in the making. Now complete, it delivers on its promise of blending biodiversity, education, and immersive design into one unforgettable indoor experience.
A Climate-Controlled World of Colour and Calm
Step inside and the outside world fades almost instantly. Fully indoors and carefully climate-controlled, the Butterfly Gardens maintain a warm, tropical atmosphere year-round. Soft lighting, flowing water features, and dense greenery create a soothing environment that encourages visitors to slow down, breathe deeply, and truly look around.
This is not a quick walkthrough attraction designed to rush guests from one display to the next. Instead, the gardens are deliberately slow-paced. Winding pathways invite exploration, while benches and open spaces encourage visitors to pause and watch the butterflies drift past at their own rhythm.
With more than 10,000 butterflies from regions across Asia, Africa, and the Americas, the experience feels alive and constantly changing. Butterflies are not confined behind glass. They fly freely through the biodomes, often settling on leaves, flowers, and occasionally curious visitors.
Biodomes Inspired by Asia and the Americas
The sanctuary unfolds across a series of expansive walk-through biodomes, each inspired by lush landscapes from Asia and the Americas. Towering tropical plants stretch overhead, koi ponds shimmer beneath footbridges, and the gentle sound of water adds to the sense of immersion.
Each biodome has been carefully designed to mirror natural habitats, ensuring both visual beauty and ecological authenticity. The result is an environment that feels organic rather than staged, allowing visitors to experience nature as it might appear in the wild.
The transitions between spaces are subtle, encouraging discovery rather than direction. One moment you are surrounded by dense jungle foliage, the next you find yourself beside a tranquil pond alive with movement and colour.

More Than Butterflies: A Living Rainforest
While butterflies are undoubtedly the stars of the show, they are far from the only residents. Venture deeper into the gardens and you will encounter an unexpected cast of rainforest animals sharing the space.
Two-toed sloths move lazily through the trees, Palawan bearcats observe quietly from above, and Cuvier’s dwarf caimans rest near water features. Tamanduas, Sri Lankan giant squirrels, and brilliantly coloured Gouldian finches add to the sense of biodiversity, each species carefully introduced into an open environment designed around their natural behaviours.
Rather than scheduled performances or staged feeding times, the focus here is on quiet observation. Guests are encouraged to watch, learn, and appreciate how these animals interact with their surroundings.
Designed to Help You Switch Off
According to General Manager Paul Hamilton, the goal of the Butterfly Gardens is simple but powerful: to offer a place where people can disconnect from the pace of modern life.
The attraction has been designed to feel uplifting and inviting, appealing equally to families seeking a meaningful day out, students eager to learn about ecosystems, and adults who simply want a peaceful moment surrounded by nature.
Every design choice, from lighting and sound to pathways and planting, supports that sense of calm. It is a place where lingering is not only allowed but encouraged.
Sustainability at the Heart of the Experience
Behind the beauty lies a strong commitment to sustainability and ethical practices. The butterflies housed within the gardens are ethically sourced through long-standing partnerships with small-scale farming communities in Costa Rica and the Philippines.
These partnerships support conservation-led breeding programs while providing sustainable livelihoods for local communities. Importantly, a percentage of butterflies are released back into the wild each month, helping to strengthen natural ecosystems and support pollination efforts.
This approach ensures that the attraction is not only visually stunning but also environmentally responsible, aligning entertainment with conservation.

Learning Through Interaction and Wonder
Education is a central pillar of the Butterfly Gardens Abu Dhabi. Interactive zones throughout the attraction explain the life cycle of butterflies, the importance of pollination, and the delicate balance of tropical ecosystems.
School groups can book tailored educational sessions focusing on biodiversity and environmental awareness, while guided tours are available for families, private groups, and tourists. These tours offer deeper insight into the species on display and the conservation efforts supporting them.
The learning experience is designed to feel natural and engaging, making complex ecological concepts accessible to visitors of all ages.
A Year-Round Indoor Escape
Because the entire attraction is indoors, the Butterfly Gardens are perfectly suited to the UAE climate. Whether visiting during peak summer heat or cooler winter months, guests can enjoy the same comfortable, tropical conditions throughout the year.
Beyond the gardens themselves, the venue includes a café, a boutique retail shop, and dedicated spaces for workshops and special events. This makes it easy to turn a short visit into a relaxed afternoon outing.
Visitors can also opt for a combined ticket with The National Aquarium, located just steps away, creating a full day of exploration at Al Qana.
