Anh-Thu Nguyen: A Trailblazing Pilot’s Journey to Empower Asian Women in Aerospace
In 2024, Anh-Thu Nguyen, a pioneering pilot and aerospace engineer, became the 10th woman ever to circumnavigate the globe solo in a single-engine piston ccccc. Born in the remote village of Tuy-Hoa, Vietnam, Anh-Thu’s early life was far removed from the sky-high dreams she would one day achieve. Her village, lacking electricity and running water, was a world away from the cockpit of an aircraft. But Anh-Thu dreamed big. After attending a UNICEF-built school and fleeing her war-torn homeland at the age of 12, she arrived in America with little knowledge of English. Her family lived in poverty, relying on welfare and food stamps, but these hardships only fueled her ambition.
Despite facing language barriers and financial struggles, Anh-Thu excelled academically, graduating valedictorian of her high school and ranking in the top 10 of her class at Purdue University, where she earned a Master’s in Aerospace Engineering. She is now pursuing a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Tech. Along her path, she encountered numerous obstacles, including discrimination and doubt, particularly as an Asian woman in aviation. Many around her, including some flight instructors, discouraged her from pursuing her dream of flying.
Anh-Thu’s rise to becoming a pilot was far from easy. Working for just $6 an hour as a math tutor, she took out student loans, lived in her car, and occasionally stayed at airports while undergoing flight training. Yet, her perseverance led her to become a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI/CFII/MEI/ATP), accumulating nearly 4,000 flight hours in various aircraft, including the Cessna Citation and the Lancair IVP. Today, she is a B767 pilot for a major airline and an AOPA Distinguished Flight Instructor.
Her solo circumnavigation of the globe is not just a personal achievement but also a mission to empower women in aerospace. As the Founder and President of Asian Women in Aerospace and Aviation, a nonprofit organization, Anh-Thu is dedicated to increasing the number of Asian women in the industry. With only 6% of the world’s pilots being female, her work is critical in breaking down barriers and providing opportunities for women in aviation. Through her organization, she promotes aerospace education and inspires young girls to pursue careers in STEM fields.
Anh-Thu’s story of resilience, hard work, and perseverance has resonated with millions. Despite her impressive credentials, she continues to face gender and racial bias. In 2021, she still encountered confusion and even denial of entry at airports, where security personnel were surprised to see an Asian woman as a pilot.
