Ahmed M. Al Mulla’s career began as an assistant manager at a folk culture magazine under the Royal Court of Bahrain. “Every task I handled was a chance to learn,” Al Mulla recalls. “It wasn’t just about managing subscriptions; it was about connecting with people, understanding their culture, and preserving it in meaningful ways.”
A Leap into the Ministry of Interior’s Magazine
Eager to expand his skills, Al Mulla took a bold step by joining the Ministry of Interior for their magazine, Al Aman. During his interview with Major General Mohammed Bin Daina, the Director of Media and Security Culture, a casual mention of his artistic interests caught attention.
Major General Bin Daina asked if Al Mulla would like to contribute to the article section. Without hesitation, he accepted. “It was the perfect opportunity to blend my administrative skills with my lifelong love for art,” he said. This move marked a turning point, exposing him to new media, cultural documentation, and creative storytelling.
Following in His Father’s Artistic Footsteps
Art runs deep in the Al Mulla family. Ahmed’s father, a celebrated calligrapher, dedicated over 45 years to the Royal Court. From a young age, Ahmed was surrounded by brushes, ink, and intricate designs, cultivating a natural appreciation for artistic expression.
“My father taught me that art isn’t just about creating beauty it’s about telling stories, preserving history, and connecting generations,” Al Mulla shared. Following his father’s footsteps, Ahmed blended his administrative work with artistic projects, often collaborating with his father on culturally significant pieces.
Discovering New Dimensions of Art
Al Mulla’s career took an unexpected and transformative turn when Major Saud Buhijji invited him to join the Live Broadcasting Vehicles Division as a director. Here, he discovered a new dimension of art through cinematography and live broadcasting, a medium that allowed him to merge visual storytelling with technical precision.
“Directing live broadcasts was a completely different form of art,” he explains. “It required creativity, quick thinking, and a deep understanding of human emotion. I realized art is not just static; it can move, speak, and influence people in real time.”
Collaborating on Almaqam Al Saami Al Malakiu
One of Ahmed M. Al Mulla’s most significant achievements is the artwork Almaqam Al Saami Al Malakiu, created in collaboration with his father and Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Khalifa. Commissioned by the Governor of Muharraq Governorate and the Royal Court, this masterpiece honors His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa.
The artwork, which took five years to complete, combines three artistic elements: a portrait, calligraphy, and poetry. It reflects not only the artistic mastery of its creators but also Bahrain’s rich cultural heritage and history. “It was an honor to work on this project alongside my father and Sheikh Ahmed,” Al Mulla says. “Every stroke of the brush, every word of poetry was a tribute to our culture and legacy.”
Overcoming Production Challenges
Ahmed M. Al Mulla’s versatility is further highlighted by his work in film production. He was tasked with producing 18 short movies in just 30 days, a challenge that demanded efficient coordination of diverse production teams and creative problem-solving.
“Managing tight deadlines with multiple teams was one of the most challenging experiences of my career,” Al Mulla recalls. “It taught me patience, leadership, and how to turn pressure into productivity. Every completed project was a celebration of collaboration and dedication.”
Balancing Business and Art
Alongside his public service and creative projects, Al Mulla has ventured into private business with his father. Managing a family business while pursuing high-profile artistic endeavors required discipline, vision, and strategic thinking.
“Private business allowed me to experiment, take risks, and apply what I learned from public projects,” he says. “It was surprising how much you can achieve in a short time with focus and determination.”
