Abu Dhabi Witnesses 6.9% Surge in Consumer Complaints in 2023

Abu Dhabi’s Department of Economic Development (ADDED) saw a significant 6.9% increase in consumer complaints in 2023, with 24,833 cases reported compared to 23,232 in 2022. Despite the rise, the Consumer Protection Department managed to resolve 83.4% of these cases.

The surge in complaints reflects consumers’ growing awareness of their rights and their willingness to voice concerns about goods and services. Notably, complaints regarding car maintenance and spare parts saw a substantial increase, rising by 54% from 968 in 2022 to 1,493 in 2023.

Mohammed Munif Al Mansouri, Executive Director of the Abu Dhabi Business Centre, emphasized the importance of safeguarding consumer rights and ensuring the quality of goods and services. He stated that consumer feedback contributes to service improvement and enhances the competitiveness of Abu Dhabi’s commercial sector.

The Consumer Protection Department conducts regular field visits to commercial establishments to ensure compliance with regulations and uphold consumer rights. Complaints in 2023 spanned various sectors, including electronics, household supplies, textiles, shipping services, and health clubs.

Despite challenges, ADDED remains committed to providing efficient complaint resolution mechanisms, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s reputation as a preferred destination for investments and businesses. Through continuous efforts, the department aims to foster a consumer-friendly environment while promoting economic growth and prosperity in the capital.
