If I could turn back time to the night before I boarded that flight, suitcase heavy with dreams and heart weighed down by unspoken words, I would have said so much more to my parents.Chasing success abroad was supposed to be the adventure of a lifetime — a bold chapter of independence and achievement. But what I didn’t realise then was how deeply it would reshape my heart, and how often I’d ache for the simplicity of a conversation over tea, or the sound of their voices calling me home. In the rush of excitement, anxiety, and ambition, I left without truly expressing what they meant to me, or how their quiet sacrifices built the foundation for my courage to leave. This is what I wish I had told them before I left.
Not just a rushed “I’ll miss you,” but something deeper. Something that would have made them understand what was happening in my heart.
So here it is — what I wish I told my parents before I left to chase success:

1. “I’m not leaving you — I’m chasing a version of me I haven’t met yet.”
This isn’t about getting away from home. This is about stepping into the unknown to become who I believe I can be.
You didn’t raise me to stay small. You raised me to be brave. And I’m carrying that courage with me.
2. “Your sacrifices are the reason I even dare to dream this big.”
Every late night you stayed up for me. Every school fee you paid before paying yourselves. Every meal you skipped, every comfort you delayed — that’s the foundation I’m building on.
If I succeed, it’s your victory too.

3. “I’m scared too, but I’ll never show it — because I don’t want you to worry.”
Behind my confident goodbye, there was a lump in my throat. Behind my smiles, there were silent prayers. I didn’t want to burden you with my fears.
But the truth is, I carried your faith in me like armor.
4. “Every achievement I chase — it has your name on it.”
When I work late, when I get promoted, when I stand on my own feet — I think of you. I think of how proud you’d be.
You may not be beside me, but you’re in everything I do.
5. “Please don’t mistake distance for disconnection.”
I may not call every day. I may forget birthdays in the chaos of it all. But my love for you hasn’t shrunk with the miles — it’s only stretched further, deeper, stronger.
6. “I wish I’d hugged you a little longer.”
That final hug before I left? It wasn’t long enough. I didn’t know how much I’d miss your warmth, your voice, your everyday presence.
I wish I had stayed in that moment, just a few seconds more.

7. “I want to make you proud — not just with what I achieve, but with who I become.”
I hope you’ll be proud not just of my success, but of the way I treat others. Of my honesty. Of my resilience. Of how I carry your values, even in a world so different from home.
8. “Thank you for letting me go — even when it hurt.”
I know you cried when I left. I know your heart aches during quiet dinners without me.
But still, you let me fly. That kind of love is the most selfless kind there is.
If you’re reading this, maybe you’re someone who also left — or you’re about to. Maybe you’ve had this conversation in your head a hundred times but never out loud.
Let this be a reminder:
It’s never too late to tell them what they deserve to hear.
