Ministers are contemplating setting up in-store drop-off spots in shops to enable households to recycle unwanted items without any cost.
Retailers might also be mandated to collect large electrical appliances for recycling when delivering replacements, eliminating charges for collection on delivery services.
Recycling Boost Plans:
The government aims to revamp recycling efforts, prompted by findings that reveal around 155,000 tonnes of smaller household electricals are improperly discarded annually, including cables, toasters, kettles, and power tools.
The estimated 500 tonnes of discarded fairy lights during Christmas further underscore the need for better waste management.
Consultation and Ministerial Statement:
Ministers will engage with manufacturers, retailers, and small businesses in a 10-week consultation period to discuss these reform plans.
Robbie Moore, the Recycling Minister, emphasized the importance of halting unnecessary disposal of household electricals, highlighting the staggering waste generated during the festive season.
Vape Recycling and Public Opinion:
The consultation also touches on ensuring vape suppliers finance the collection of single-use products to reduce landfill disposal, although full recycling might not be achievable.
Studies show that over 77% of households view retailers more favorably if they provide electrical recycling services, indicating a strong public inclination toward environmentally responsible practices.
