In a society where women’s participation in sports was once frowned upon, Samar took a bold step by founding the “Brave cyclist” mixed-gender cycling club in Jeddah. “I chose the name ‘Brave cyclist’ because what we are doing takes courage… to go out on the streets and practice in public and in crowded places,” she explains. The club, now boasting hundreds of female members, offers bike tours and riding lessons, making cycling accessible to all, regardless of financial means.
The transformation in public perception since 2017 has been remarkable. “The situation before 2017 was very difficult because of society’s reluctance to accept women in sport, especially cycling,” Samar recalls. Today, the sight of women cycling through Jeddah’s streets has become increasingly common, signaling a shift towards greater acceptance and inclusivity.
Navigating Challenges and Staying Grounded
Breaking into male-dominated fields like motorsports and cycling wasn’t without its challenges. Samar faced skepticism and societal resistance, but her unwavering determination propelled her forward. “Purpose is my anchor,” she asserts, emphasizing the importance of aligning her actions with her vision. Through fitness, planning, and reflection, she maintains focus and continues to inspire others.
