Abu Dhabi’s Mangrove Initiative: Planting 44 Million Trees

Since 2020, EAD has proudly reported a significant success in the ambitious planting of 44 million mangrove trees around the emirate.

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) proudly announced a monumental success in the ambitious planting of 44 million mangrove trees across the emirate since 2020. 

This substantial initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the Department of Municipalities and Transport and ADNOC, signifies a pivotal stride in the UAE’s relentless battle against climate change.

Harnessing Mangroves for Climate Neutrality:

Within the last two years, 23 million mangrove trees, sprawling across an impressive 9,200 hectares, have taken root in the Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative (ADMI). 

Aligned with the UAE’s visionary goal of planting 100 million mangrove trees by 2030, this venture is a cornerstone in steering the nation towards climate neutrality by 2050.

Amplifying the Environmental Agenda:

The Abu Dhabi, Climate Change Strategy, receives a substantial boost through this initiative, amplifying efforts to preserve and revive mangrove ecosystems. 

These efforts aim not only to bolster the role of mangroves in combating climate change but also to significantly expand their capacity to store approximately 233,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

Endorsement and Commitment from Key Leaders:

Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in the Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Board of Directors of EAD, expressed his jubilation, aligning this achievement with the UAE’s Year of Sustainability. 

He lauded Abu Dhabi’s unwavering dedication to perpetuating the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed in nurturing coastal ecosystems.

Paving the Way for Sustainability:

Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology & UAE Special Envoy for Climate, Group MD & CEO of ADNOC, commended this milestone. 

He reiterated the commitment to utilizing nature-based solutions to combat climate change, emphasizing ADNOC’s decade-long support for mangrove cultivation in collaboration with EAD.

Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, emphasized the significance of mangrove planting as a potent nature-based solution in the fight against climate change. 

Abu Dhabi’s achievement in planting 23 million mangrove trees is a testament to the UAE’s commitment to global climate action and its role as a steward of a sustainable future.
