Early Life and Musical Roots
Born in Mabopane, Pretoria, South Africa, Ofentse Pitse’s upbringing was steeped in rich musical traditions. Her family’s deep involvement with The Salvation Army church, notably her grandfather Otto Pitse’s role as a prominent jazz trumpeter and co-founder of the iconic Sophiatown jazz band, The Jazz Maniacs, laid a strong foundation for her musical journey. At the age of 12, Ofentse’s curiosity led her to the trumpet, marking the beginning of her profound connection with music. Despite limited formal training, her dedication and resilience propelled her to master the instrument, guided by classically trained mentors who recognized her potential.
Balancing Architecture and Music
While her passion for music was undeniable, Ofentse also harbored a deep interest in architecture. She pursued this passion academically, earning a Master’s degree in Architecture from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits University) in honor of her late mother, Pearl Matshidiso Pitse. This dual commitment showcases her multifaceted talent and determination to excel in both fields.
Founding Anchored Sound
In 2017, driven by a vision to create a platform for young, classically trained, disenfranchised musicians, Ofentse founded Anchored Sound. What began as a youth choir rehearsing in a classroom soon evolved into a formidable ensemble comprising a 40-piece orchestra and a 25-member choir. This transformation was fueled by her commitment to provide a space where African expression within classical music could thrive. Under the mentorship of esteemed conductors Thami Zungu and Gerben Grooten, she honed her conducting skills, breaking barriers as the first young, black female conductor of an all-black orchestra and choir in Africa.
Breaking Barriers and Gaining Recognition
Ofentse’s groundbreaking work with Anchored Sound did not go unnoticed. Her innovative approach and dedication to inclusivity in the classical music scene garnered attention from global brands such as Veuve Clicquot, Forbes Africa, CHANEL, Woolworths, Bidvest, Toyota Global, Netflix, and Redbull. These collaborations not only elevated her profile but also amplified the orchestra’s mission to showcase African talent on prestigious platforms.
Collaborations with Global Icons
A pinnacle moment in Ofentse’s career was her collaboration with international superstar Alicia Keys. In celebration of the 20th anniversary of Keys’ iconic song “If I Ain’t Got You,” Ofentse was selected to conduct and participate in a recording with a 74-piece global female orchestra of color. This reimagined version was featured in the Netflix series “Queen Charlotte,” a testament to Ofentse’s rising influence in the global music arena. Additionally, she spearheaded a special arrangement of 2Face Idibia’s beloved track “African Queen” for Netflix Africa’s rollout of the same series, collaborating with renowned artists Msaki (South Africa), Nikita Kering (Kenya), and Fave (Nigeria).
Merging Genres: Amapiano Meets Orchestra
Demonstrating her versatility and commitment to pushing musical boundaries, Ofentse partnered with Redbull for the groundbreaking project “Red Bull Symphonic presents Kabza de Small and Ofentse Pitse, with the Symphonic Orchestra.” This innovative endeavor seamlessly blended the worlds of orchestral music and Amapiano, a popular South African music genre. The success of this production received widespread acclaim, solidifying Ofentse’s reputation as a pioneering visionary in contemporary music.
Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, Ofentse aims to explore more unexpected collaborations across various genres and art forms. She envisions merging her architectural expertise with her musical endeavors, creating curated experiences that transcend traditional boundaries. Her commitment to driving inclusivity and creating spaces for African expression within classical music remains unwavering. As she eloquently states, “I want to drive inclusivity because it’s hard to belong, either in a boardroom or a soundstage. Being a black woman, I have had to learn how to assert myself in male-dominated environments, to defend my work. And that is my purpose. To say to others who feel that they don’t belong—you can, you do, you must. There is no limit to what you can achieve.”
