These innovations will greatly expand the scientific capabilities of the force, setting a new benchmark for forensic investigations.

From Humble Beginnings to Global Recognition

Major General Dr Ahmed Thani bin Ghleita, Director of the General Department of Forensic Evidence and Criminology at Dubai Police, highlighted the remarkable growth of the department. He explained that the department began with just two specializations and has now expanded to more than 45, supported by a workforce of 620 experts. The transformation is also reflected in the staff composition, which is now over 90 percent Emirati, compared to none at the start.

What began in a modest two-room building has now grown into a world-class facility built to the highest standards. The new complex, designed with inspiration from the human body, is under construction on Tunisia Street and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. It will house specialized laboratories, training centers, and AI-enabled systems that aim to reduce examination times and improve the accuracy of investigations.

Technology Driving Faster Investigations

Dubai Police have introduced several technological breakthroughs that are reshaping forensic work. Among these innovations is a rapid drug-testing device capable of delivering results in just ten minutes, a process that previously took up to three days. The device, developed in-house, can detect 14 to 15 types of narcotics.

A portable DNA testing kit has also been developed, enabling investigators to analyze samples on-site without requiring a full laboratory. In addition, saliva-based drug tests provide instant results. A wearable device called Patch is currently under development, which will allow continuous real-time drug detection by analyzing sweat from areas such as the upper arm, chest, or back. These technologies are revolutionizing the speed and efficiency of crime investigations.

Genomics Department Leading the Way

A key addition to Dubai Police’s scientific capabilities is the Forensic Genomics Department, led by Emirati researcher Dr Mohammed Al Marri. This unit has identified genetic mutations specific to Emirati populations and established important research collaborations, contributing to regional scientific leadership. The department uses advanced DNA technologies to identify individuals, analyze biological traces, and assist in complex investigations.

Major General bin Ghleita recounted a case demonstrating the life-saving potential of forensic genomics. A young boy had died unexpectedly in his sleep. Initial examinations revealed no signs of foul play. However, genome analysis conducted with the family’s consent uncovered a rare gene linked to sudden death. The same gene was found in the mother and sister. Thanks to early detection, the family could take preventive measures, ensuring a normal life and avoiding potentially fatal consequences. This case demonstrates how forensic science extends beyond crime solving to matters of public health and safety.

Achievements and Examination Volumes

In the past year alone, Dubai Police conducted 65,000 specialized forensic examinations. These were carried out by more than 225 experts working across multiple disciplines. The services provided support investigations across Dubai and the UAE, reflecting the department’s commitment to excellence and innovation in forensic science.

The New Forensic Medicine Complex

The upcoming Dh525 million facility will feature state-of-the-art laboratories, autopsy units, repatriation services, and fully integrated post-mortem capabilities, designed with lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic. The complex will introduce several advanced scientific disciplines including forensic dentistry for identifying human remains and analyzing bite-mark evidence, forensic entomology to determine the time and circumstances of death using insect activity, advanced pathology focusing on diseases affecting the brain and their forensic relevance, and a genomics department employing next-generation DNA technologies to identify individuals and trace biological materials.

An AI-enhanced medical theatre will provide a high-tech training environment for internal simulations, allowing forensic experts to refine their skills using artificial intelligence. One of the most remarkable advancements is the virtual autopsy, which reduces the procedure time from four hours to just five minutes. The facility will also include a forensic nursing specialty, handling approximately 40 percent of a forensic doctor’s tasks, which further accelerates procedures and improves work efficiency.

Building the Future of Forensic Leaders

The Forensic Evidence Forum, now established as a fully institutional initiative with its own identity and budget, is designed to cultivate the next generation of scientific talent. Dubai Police collaborate with 25 universities in the UAE and abroad through the International Center for Security Studies, overseeing bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral research.
