Amid global attention on changes in the world sevens series, the Dubai Sevens continues to show that rugby can grow even in regions where it was once considered unlikely. The event has become a stage where talent, determination, and teamwork shine, proving that the sport has a strong future in the Middle East.
Seven years after taking their first tentative steps in rugby, the all-Emirati Al Maha women’s team has become a familiar fixture at this annual carnival. Their journey reflects how dedication and passion can transform a sport in a region where opportunities for women’s rugby were limited.
Al Maha is not only focusing on their senior team but also developing a junior squad. This initiative helps cultivate the next generation of players and has sparked a friendly rivalry with a Saudi Arabian team, demonstrating how women’s rugby is beginning to thrive across the Gulf.
Al Maha Women’s Team Makes Remarkable Progress
Since their debut in 2018, Al Maha has steadily improved. Their performance at the 2025 Gulf Women’s tournament was a testament to their growth, as they defeated Saudi Tuwaiq 24-0 in the opening match. The victory was celebrated not only by the players but also by a younger group of aspiring rugby athletes who watched and learned from the experience.
For the first time, Al Maha fielded two teams at Dubai Sevens, including a squad for the Gulf Under 19 Girls event. This milestone is significant as it represents the growing culture of women’s rugby in the UAE. It shows how the sport is expanding at both grassroots and competitive levels, creating opportunities for young players to follow in the footsteps of their mentors.
Afra Rashed, one of the pioneering Al Maha players, spoke about the team’s approach and values. “We’re playing as a team, one heart, one family, and we are building and growing step by step. We give the U19 players support and are with them at all times. We show them that it can be tough, but it’s rewarding when you share it together. There is one love in our family, and when there’s love, everything grows.”

Saudi Team Shows Significant Improvement
Saudi Arabia’s women’s rugby team made their Dubai Sevens debut last year and initially struggled against more experienced opponents. While they lost their matches, the team gained valuable experience. This year, their progress was visible on the field. Although Al Maha defeated them again, the Saudi team displayed improved technique and strategy. They controlled possession well and had a strong forward pack, while Al Maha relied on speed and agility to secure the win.
“They were tough, and we were very grateful to play with them,” Afra Rashed said. “Even if we are smaller and lighter than them, what matters is playing with your heart.”
Building a Growing Rivalry
The emergence of the Saudi team has created an exciting dynamic in regional women’s rugby. Dana Abdulla, a veteran player with Al Maha, emphasized the importance of having a team with similar cultural traditions to compete against. “When we first heard Saudi Arabia was forming a girls’ team, we were so happy. Finally, we have opponents who share the same traditions as we do. The first time they came, we were excited to teach them and play together. Their coach used to coach us, and seeing them improve was very heartwarming.”
The rivalry has also fostered a sense of national pride. Dana explained, “Because it is a team game, I enjoy working with my teammates on strategies. So many different personalities come together as one family and one team. Representing my country makes me proud, my family proud, and gives me personal satisfaction.”
Rugby Flourishes Across the Middle East
Even though the main HSBC SVNS event features only eight teams in the men’s and women’s competitions, the outer fields at Dubai Sevens illustrate how rugby can grow anywhere when given the chance. The presence of both Emirati and Saudi teams demonstrates that women’s sports are gaining visibility and momentum in the region. It also encourages young athletes to take up rugby and shows that support at both grassroots and competitive levels can nurture talent.
Al Maha’s dedication to mentoring junior players, combined with the rapid development of the Saudi team, highlights a growing infrastructure for women’s rugby. The Dubai Sevens is no longer just an international showcase; it has become a platform celebrating determination, teamwork, and cultural progress.

Inspiring the Next Generation
Al Maha’s efforts go beyond winning matches. By involving younger players and creating opportunities for them to participate, they are inspiring the next generation of female athletes. Watching senior players lead, mentor, and guide them instills confidence and motivates them to continue pursuing rugby. This mentorship also fosters community engagement and creates a supportive environment where young girls can aspire to compete at higher levels.
The presence of competitive teams from neighboring countries also plays a key role in developing the sport. Friendly rivalries push players to improve while highlighting the importance of collaboration and shared learning. As both Emirati and Saudi teams continue to develop, they are raising the standard of women’s rugby across the Gulf.
Looking Ahead
The rivalry between UAE and Saudi women is still in its early stages, but it shows great promise. For Al Maha, the focus remains on unity, mentorship, and continuous growth. Their approach ensures that the sport is accessible and sustainable, fostering talent that will compete not just regionally but potentially on an international stage.
Each tournament provides players with valuable experience, builds confidence, and strengthens the bond between teammates. Dubai Sevens has evolved into more than just a rugby competition; it is a celebration of culture, resilience, and sporting excellence. The event demonstrates that with determination and support, women’s rugby can thrive and inspire a new generation of athletes in the Middle East.
As the sport continues to grow, the collaboration, competition, and camaraderie between Emirati and Saudi teams will remain a highlight. Their achievements are paving the way for a stronger, more inclusive future for women’s rugby in the region, where passion, dedication, and teamwork create lasting impact both on and off the field.
