UAE Tops Arab States in Global Knowledge Index 2023: Knowledge Summit Reveals Key Findings

In a recent announcement during the eighth edition of the Knowledge Summit held at the Dubai World Trade Centre, the UAE emerged as the leading performer among Arab states in the Global Knowledge Index 2023. Organized by the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation (MBRF) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the summit shed light on the UAE’s exemplary performance in various knowledge sectors.

The unveiling of the Global Knowledge Index (GKI) 2023 rankings showcased the UAE’s dominance in knowledge-based development. Out of a total of 133 countries evaluated, including 12 Arab states, the UAE secured the top position. Following closely behind were Qatar in second place and Saudi Arabia in third place. This recognition underscores the UAE’s commitment to fostering innovation and knowledge-driven growth.

The GKI 2023 report, based on 155 variables sourced from over 40 international databases, highlighted the UAE’s strengths across multiple dimensions. Key metrics such as active mobile broadband subscriptions, educational attainment, and entrepreneurial activity contributed to the UAE’s exceptional performance. The report also emphasized Qatar’s significant strengths in research and development, while Saudi Arabia showcased robust performance in information and communications technology sectors.

Further analysis revealed Kuwait’s achievements in industry, services, and education, along with Egypt and Morocco’s strengths in higher education, research, and industrial sectors. The comprehensive assessment provided by the GKI serves as a valuable tool for evaluating the global knowledge landscape and identifying areas for improvement.

During the panel discussion titled ‘Building knowledge cities together: UNDP and MBRF partnership for the 5th industrial revolution’, key stakeholders discussed the importance of collaborative efforts in advancing knowledge-based development. Attendees included Jamal bin Huwaireb, CEO of MBRF, Khaled Abdel Shafi, Director of the Regional Hub for Arab States, UNDP, and Dr. Hany Torky, Chief Technical Adviser and Project Manager, Knowledge Project, UNDP.

The GKI 2023 report not only highlights the UAE’s achievements but also serves as a call to action for other countries to enhance their knowledge infrastructure. With seven sub-indices assessing pivotal knowledge sectors and an Enabling Environment sub-index capturing socio-political contexts, the report offers valuable insights into sustainable development strategies.

The UAE’s leading position in the GKI reflects its commitment to innovation, education, and economic diversification. By prioritizing knowledge-based growth, the UAE aims to solidify its position as a global leader in the knowledge economy. The success showcased at the Knowledge Summit reaffirms the UAE’s status as a hub for innovation and excellence in the Arab world.
